SA80 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When a smaller calibre than the current 7.62 mm round was suggested for NATO standardisation, the Royal Small Arms Factory developed the XL65 bullpup rifle to fire the new.190 in (4.85 mm) round it was submitting to the NATO new cartridge selection trials announced in 1977.
The XL65 was essentially an AR-18 reconfigured in bullpup layout.
When the American caliber was selected, the XL65 was rechambered to fire the new NATO standard, a contingency that had been anticipated.

The XL65 was essentially the mechanism of an AR-18 redesigned in an EM2 layout bullpup configuration.
When the larger round was selected, the XL65 was rechambered to fire the 5.56 mm round, a contingency that had been anticipated.

When NATO trials were announced in 1977 to select a new cartridge, British state-owned Enfield Small Arms Factory developed its own small-caliber, high velocity round, which was more or less representing the US.223/5.56mm case necked down to accept 4.85mm (0.19 inch) bullet.
This weapon, being somewhat similar in outline to the much earlier British Enfield EM-2 assault rifle, was internally quite different, and, basically, was more or less the US-made Armalite AR-18 rifle, put into bullpup stock and rechambered for 4.85mm cartridge.
After NATO trials, which resulted in adoption of the Belgian SS-109 version of the 5.56mm cartridge, Enfield engineers rechambered XL65 for this cartridge and continued its development under the designation of XL70.
