The XM107 was used to engage both vehicular and personnel targets out to 1400 meters.
Leaders and scouts viewed the effect of the 50 cal round as a combat multiplier due to the psychological impact on other combatants that viewed the destruction of the target.

According to Carpenter, the beginning of the XM107 program dates back to the mid-1990s when Army planners began looking for a heavy sniper rifle in.50-caliber.
Following the conduct of a suppressor market survey late last year, Carpenter said that program planners are now looking toward an entire family of suppressors with the XM107 investigations serving as the front edge for that entire family.
Although the weapon is capable of firing the full family of.50-caliber ammunition minus the SLAP round, it is really tailored to the Mark 211 (Mk211) round, the.50-caliber multipurpose anti-materiel round.

NDM Article - Fine-Tuning of Army’s New Rifle to Continue Until 2004
This weapon, designed by Barrett Firearms Manufacturing Inc., of Murfreesburo, Tenn., is 10 pounds lighter and a foot shorter than the two-decade-old,.50 caliber sniper rifle currently used by the armed services, the M82A3, also made by Barrett.
With a weight of 23 pounds and an overall length of nearly four feet, however, the XM107 is still a hefty weapon, admitted Bob Galeazzi, product manager for the rifle at Picatinny.
The XM107 has a dual-chamber muzzle brake and recoil pad to reduce recoil, and its lighter weight makes it easier to carry and shoot, according to George Kontis, executive director of marketing and business development for Barrett.

The XM107 rifle, meanwhile, has a pop-up iron sight that, when raised, is directly in front of the objective lens.
As noted by the agency, however, front and rear pop-up/fold-down iron sights are a permanent part of the XM107 rifle, as specified in the official configuration for that weapon.
Further, the agency tested the sights with the iron sight folded down, since it is positioned directly in front of the night sight’s objective lens, and thus would obscure part of the lens if left in the raised position, thereby reducing the amount of incoming light and the resulting image quality.

FYI: The current order for the Barrett XM107 is for the semi-auto M82A1M, not the bolt-action M95M bullpup.
It is true that the original XM107.50 BMG sniper rifle trials were fought out between bolt-action rifles such as the Barrett M95M and the EDM Windrunner.
Personally, I suspect that the name change had more to do with budget requests than anything else.
