In concept the OICW is basically that of a grenade launcher with a laser range-finder.
A 20mm OICW canister round would be slightly larger calibre than a 12g round, and being longer could probably carry more shot or flechettes.
In addition to the OICW there should also be a compatible underbarrel weapon with at least a three round capacity for door-breaching.

In addition, preliminary tests in Arizona deserts have shown it to be an extremely rugged weapon, capable of firing 25,000 rounds before any overhaul is necessary.

The XM29 proved to be too heavy and bulky during field tests, but users were very impressed with the Heckler-Koch portion of the weapon.
At the time, it was suggested that the 5.56mm portion of the XM29 was a superb weapon and might make an excellent replacement for the four decade old M-16.

The XM8 will be based on the kinetic energy weapon that is part of the XM29 next-generation infantry weapon system (formerly the Objective Individual Combat Weapon) currently under development by ATK Integrated Defense.
The progress made to reduce weight and improve performance on the XM29 program is key to the decision on accelerating the development of the XM8, which is integrated with the Army's efforts to transform to a more lethal and rapidly deployed fighting force as part of its Objective Force.
The XM8 is part of the Army's effort to perfect an over-and-under style weapon, known as the XM29, developed by Alliant Techsystems and H&K. It fires special air-bursting projectiles and standard 5.56mm ammunition.

 Advanced Air Burst: The XM25
With the XM25, ATK has increased the size of the grenades from 20mm to 25mm for increased lethality and (wisely) separated the grenade launcher element from the 5.56 subcarbine element, creating a stand-alone semi-auto 25mm multiple grenade launcher (MGL) that just might have solved all of the problems that plagued the XM29/OICW.
When I first saw the behemoth that was the OICW, a number of years ago, I immediately disliked it.
One of the first thoughts I had upon viewing it was that the 20mm grenade launcher should be a separate weapon.

Not being able to discern, the OICW is an indiscriminate weapon and illegal under all International Laws.
The OICW will "revolutionize warfare much as the introduction of the machine gun did early in this century," says Don Sticinski of Alliant Techsystems, "its unique capabilities will enable US combat troops to virtually shoot around corners to defeat targets behind barriers." The weapon will not be able to see around corners.

One of the most touted advantages of the OICW grenade launcher is the ability to hit enemies behind obstacles, because of the delayed fuse.

First, it now appears that the XM29 OICW will probably be abandoned in favour of two stand-alone weapons.
Although US Army spokespersons state that the XM29 programme has not been abandoned, the absence of the XM29 and the presence of two new and separate systems at recent trade shows indicate otherwise.
I don't believe that indicating that the XM8 is basically an attempt to justify the expense of the failed XM29 program equates to naysaying, especially considering that I remarked that it looks to be a pretty solid rifle in the very next sentence.

Very basically, the U.S. military wanted a weapon system that mates a conventional rifle with a 20mm "cannon" that is capable of delivering a special munition that can be user set to explode with an airburst at user determined and programmable ranges.
