Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) / Selectable Assault Battle Rifle (SABR)
SABR is a modular weapon system, consisting of the Fire Control System (FCS); a "kinetic energy" component comprised of a short 5.56mm rifle barrel and trigger group from the Heckler & Koch 036 assault rifle; and the grenade launcher consisting of a magazine-fed, semiautomatic 2Omm grenade launcher barrel and an action and recoil absorption mechanism.
While the present generation SABR weighs about 18 pounds, the goal for production units is 14 pounds, or about the weight of the current M16/M203 with optical sight.
Development of the complete XM29 (OICW Increment 3) system was shelved, and will be resumed once the OICW Increment 1 and 2 components are developed, and weight constraints of entire system are met.

Plans for eventual fielding the XM29 are to issue four units per one infantry squad of 9 men.
The rifle, or "kinetic energy" part of the XM29 system, on the other hand, is a fairly conventional, short-barrelled assault rifle, derived from the Heckler and Koch G36 assault rifle.
While being mounted to the whole system, it can be used for close quarters work, both defensive or offensive (the 20mm grenade launcher has a minimum range of fire of about 50–100 meters), or as a low-cost, low intensity medium range offensive weapon.

The American XM29 SABR, or the Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW) was supposed to replace the M16 and M4, but a weight problem (it was pushing 18 pounds) forced a split.
This rifle was to have a modified XM8 firng 5.56mm bullets, and a 20mm semiautomatic grenade launcher with a six-round clip, for distant targets.
So, it was split into the XM8 and the XM25, which was modified to use the 25mm smart shell for the XM307 (the Objective Crew-Served Weapon), and the XM25 will have a five-round clip for the 25mm grenades (with an optional ten-round clip).

By the early 2000s, the weapon had settled on a design and was classified as the XM29.
However, the weapon had serious problems - it did not meet weight or cost targets, and the 20mm smart grenades did not seem to be lethal enough in testing.
This resulted in the army starting development on new weapons, and finally shelving the XM29 in 2004.

Unfortunately, the two pages dedicated to the OICW are based on information some two years out of date; the rifle isn't even called OICW anymore; last fall the army redesignated it as the XM29 SABR, and it was plenty early enough to have made it to copy before the book went to the printers.
