  XM8
The XM8 is the project name for a lightweight, compact assault rifle under development, most prominently by the German small arms manufacturer Heckler und Koch.
The XM8 uses the core of the XM29 OICW project (also under development by H&K), namely its kinetic energy components, which are a derivative of the H&K G36 rifle, which is based on the Armalite AR-18.
The materials used to build the XM8 are almost entirely composites, causing it to be 20% lighter than the M4 (in similar cases).

The XM8 (M8 if it's adopted) assault rifle is a proposed replacement for the current M16 rifle and M4 carbine, the standard infantry weapons in today's US military.
The XM8 seems to be an aberration in the military procurement sector.
The XM8 could help alleviate that by reducing the time required to complete the task, which will increase the odds that the task is attempted, and by being more forgiving if/when the task is forgotten or ignored.

Tavor vs. XM8 - Military Photos
XM8 is in the testing stage but the rave review from Army is pretty impressive.
I still think XM8 is just another 5.56 platform that the M16 system can easily acomplish but in order for the XM29 to move forward, the XM8 is the only system available on the market to reintergrate back into the XM29 system.
XM8 with the 12 inch barrel is the basica version that meet reintergration back to the XM29 project in the future when the technology will catch up with the weight require for all the sub systems.
