  XMLTerm
XMLterm adds powerful hypertext and graphical capabilities to the Xterm-like terminal interface through its use of the eXtensible Markup Language (XML).
XMLterm works with plain text Unix shells (and a Windows port may be on the radar), but ideally will ultimately be used with XML-aware shells and XML-aware Unix/GNU utilities.
XMLterm is implemented using the open source Mozilla browser components.

Mozilla.
По этой причине XMLterm полностью обратно совместим с XTERM и его предшественником — интерфейсом терминала VT100.

XMLterm typically uses the UNIX pseudo-TTY interface to communicate with the shell.
XMLterm may compile on other Unix platforms, but it will use NSPR pipes, rather than a pseudo-TTY, for process communication; this means that the terminal control characters, such as Control-C for interrupting jobs, will not work on those platforms.
Double-clicking is used to activate all XMLterm features, *except* for command prompts and underlined hyperlinks, which are activated by a single click as in a browser.

XMLterm allows users to switch between the CLI and GUI at the micro level, i.e., for each command within a work session.
This is not true in the case of XMLterm, where many applications share the same window, reducing window clutter.

The reason I have been slow to do that is that full copy-and-paste will be part of a full drag-and-drop implementation, including dragging icons to and from the desktop and have the option of icons appearing in the xmlterm command line.

A common theme of Unix advocacy is how powerful the command-line is, yet in contrast with the endless frantic activity in GUI toolkits, these days little work is put into improving the command line environment.
One easy way to improve the CLI would be to revive xmlterm, which let scripts output HTML or XML that would be rendered into your shell session.
Unfortunately the xmlterm project is dead, though its source is still in the Mozilla source tree.

Whether then the terminal internally has a matrix of glyph cells (like Emacs has) or not (like a Postscript or HTML backend), is the terminal's business.
Some terminals, like xmlterm , are already one step further, by allowing inlined images.
A standard describing a first step into this direction would already be very good.

Other demonstrations of alternate uses of Mozilla like the Script Editor and XMLTerm already do this, although these tend to feel more like extensions of the existing Mozilla framework.
A more radical non-browser application of Mozilla would have the benefit of extending the discussion of Mozilla as a platform and might bring new people into the community who are interested in this new aspect of the project.
