  freshmeat.net: Project details for XMMS
XMMS is a multimedia player based on the look of WinAmp.
XMMS has a plugin system for Input / Output / Effects / Visualization, and through plugins it can play a lot more sound and video formats.
I just installed the new xmms to mandrake 7.1 and it compiles fine from both rpm and tar.gz source, but when it starts it complains that the playlist font cannot be found and it doesn't show any songnames in the playlist.

Gentoo Linux Documentation -- The How and Why of XMMS removal
XMMS has been around for a very long time and was used by a lot of people.
Metalgod, the current maintainer, decided to step down as XMMS was beyond repair down and since nobody wanted to undertake the massive work, it was decided that support will be dropped in the main Portage tree since Gentoo obviously can't afford to offer unmaintained packages.
After years of using xmms, now it is time to return the goodbye issued on the xmms homepage - thanks to the xmms team for bringing a nice piece of software, and goodbye old sailor.

Bug 1572 - XMMS crashing when exitting while playing when using crossfade+alsa
I already found a workaround for this; but unfortunatelly it involves a small patch to XMMS itself: If I have access to the 'playlist_get_info_going' symbol in xmms/plugin.c, I can check if XMMS is quitting and stop using ALSA before it is cleaned up.
When XMMS is about to be closed, it does, among other things, the following: 1) Stop playback and close_audio() the output plugin.
This is simply because when XMMS is quitting, it unloads the plugins in the order they appear in the Ouput plugin list -- that is, in alphabetical order.

XMMS passes the original memory references of XMMS structures to the plugins, which allows badly written plugins to crash XMMS in new and interesting ways.
In October of 2005, Milosz forked BMP (which was essentially XMMS with GTK2 and a ton of code refactoring, but not much in the way of new features) and called it BMPx; although I use the term 'fork' loosely, as he decided to start the rewrite from scratch.
XMMS has zero bug count but the codebase is so flawed that no one who codes would want to put his fingers into it.

Once XMMS is up and running, it is easy to use, as its controls mimic those of an ordinary CD player.

There are enough tutorials on how to get XMMS working for you, and how to set up ALSA, but there's nothing really on what to do next.
As XMMS development is slow, and no big things have changed in XMMS for a long time, don't expect Winamp 3 or above skins to work, but if you're like me, and miss those old Winamp 2 skins, you're lucky!
Since there are only a few XMMS skins, and alot of Winamp 2 skins, it might be worth the little trouble to get them working in XMMS.
