The most recent version of xMule is version 1.13.6 which was released on March 1 2006.
xMule is a fork of the lMule client, which itself was originally a Linux-only port of the eMule client.
The name xMule was created as the new official name for the lMule project when it was first ported to FreeBSD in early May 2003 and the maintainers effectively lost control of the lMule website.

However, xMule is still under active development, primarily by HopeSeekr, the person who originally forked lMule.
NOTE: aMule is a separate project and is not related to xMule in any way (apart from being originally a fork from it).

xMule is a freely available file sharing program for the Edonkey file sharing network for Linux and Unix-based operating systems.
xMule versions prior to 1.4.3 are vulnerable to a format string attack.
A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by passing a specially-crafted packet to the program, which could possibly allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system with privileges of the xMule client.

eMule versions 0.29c and earlier, xMule versions 1.4.2 and earlier, xMule versions 1.5.6a and earlier, and Lmule versions 1.3.1 and earlier could allow a remote attacker to execute code on the client.
A remote attacker can send a special sequence of packets to trigger an error, which deletes the currently used client object, and allows the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the client.
