Xerox Network Services - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the 1980s XNS was used by 3Com and (with modifications) a number of other commercial systems which became more common than XNS itself, including Ungermann-Bass Net/One, Novell NetWare, and Banyan VINES.
XNS was intended to be a commercial descendant of the research/development oriented PUP.
XNS specifically is no longer in use, due to the all-pervasiveness of IP.

XNS protocols - Xerox Network Systems - IDP | RIP | PEP | SPP
XNS generally limits the IDP packets to a maximum size of 576 bytes, excluding the data link header.
XNS distributes routing information on the network by routers broadcasting their routing tables every 30 seconds.
XNS generally uses the Echo protocol to demonstrate the existence and accessibility of another host on the network, while using the Error protocol to signal routing errors.

XNS also defines Level 4 protocols, which are application protocols, but because they have little to do with actual communication functions, the XNS specification does not include any pertinent definitions.

 TBTF Log, week of 2000-09-24
XNS was developed by OneName to enable Internet users and businesses to exchange data in an automated way with privacy protection built in at the core.
What sets XNS apart from all the various wannabe-standard proprietary technologies is that OneName is licensing the patent that governs this technology to a newly formed non-profit, the XNS Public Trust Organization, or XNSORG.
The key to it all is XNSORG, which is the non-profit tasked with coordinating the maintenance of the XNS technology and creating a governance structure for the XNS community.

Cover Pages: Extensible Name Service (XNS)
XNS is based on two key technologies: XML, the new global standard for platform-independent information exchange, and web agents, a patented new technology that automates the exchange, linking, and synchronization of information between publishers and subscribers over digital networks.
As with XML documents, XNS objects are a nested tree of component objects which are all one of two types: schema objects, which represent registered XNS schema definitions, and instance objects containing the attributes values for the resource.
Because all XNS schema objects are themselves registered in XNS, XNS acts as one completely self-referential logical XML document." Phase Two of the will also introduce user-defined schemas: "as it is with XML, distributed schema authoring is one of the key extensibility features of XNS.

At that time XNS registrations were discontinued and XNSORG and OneName agreed that all XNS name registrants would have the opportunity to renew their registrations at no charge once service was restarted under the new OASIS specifications.
XNS allowed an Internet email address to be used directly as an XNS name.

 XNS (Extensible Name Service)
Extensible Name Service (XNS) is a new open protocol and open-source platform for universal addressing, automated data exchange, and privacy control based on XML and web agents (a technology that automates the exchange, linking, and synchronization of information between publishers and subscribers over digital networks).
XNS is the first universal technology for creating automatic, self-updating links between people and businesses that communicate using the Internet.
In theory, XNS technology could be used to enable businesses and consumers to be represented by one simple address, while streamlining e-commerce transactions and allowing every data exchange to be covered by an automatic privacy contract.

Banyan VINES - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Banyan VINES (for Virtual Integrated NEtwork Service) was a computer network operating system and the set of computer network protocols it used to talk to client machines on the network.
The Banyan company based the VINES operating system on Unix, and the network protocols on the archetypical Xerox XNS stack.
Addresses consisted of a 32-bit address and a 16-bit subnet, which mapped onto the 48-bit Ethernet address in order to route to machines.

 Configuring XNS
When XNS routing is enabled, the address used is either the IEEE-compliant address specified in the XNS routing configuration command or the first IEEE-compliant address in the system.
XNS routes are marked invalid if no routing updates are heard within three times the value of the update interval (3 ¥ interval) and are advertised with a metric of infinity.
XNS routes are removed from the routing table if no routing updates are heard within six times the value of the update interval (6 ¥ interval).

On July 9, 2002 his quest was rewarded, as XNSORG (The XNS Public Trust Organization) and OneName, Inc. (holder of the relevant technology patents) signed an IPR agreement allowing XNSORG to make the XNS protocol available royalty free, and in a manner that is fully amenable to Open Source Initiative licensing.
Simultaneously with signing this agreement, the XNS 1.0 specification was released, so the world can finally examine and consider this protocol.
XNS began as a technology to extend the concept of DNS to the realm of identity - thus its name eXtensible Name Service.

Define Extensible Name Service - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: XNS
Extensible Name Service (XNS) is an open Extensible Markup Language (XML)-based protocol that specifies a way to establish and manage a universal addressing system.
An XNS universal address serves as a permanent contact point for an individual or other legal entity, such as a business.
XNS can be considered to be an enhanced version of the domain name system (DNS) because it resolves a universal address into any other kind of address, just as DNS resolves a domain name into an IP address.

Names in XNS can be up to 64 characters long, and each character can come from the Unicode character set, meaning that there are 1,024 possible combinations for each position, and it's as internationally savvy as possible at the moment.
The XNS Global Terms also make it clear that it's acceptable to be anonymous or pseudonymous in situations where you're not claiming a true legal identity as long as you aren't knowingly misrepresenting yourself as another person.

Yet, despite the fact that xN's presentation was illusory, I still experienced it as being real while it lasted, because I trusted that HE was real.
My xN played into all my needs and wants - he represented himself to be God-loving and spiritual (not religious); a unique but traditional man; emotionally tenacious, warm, available and affectionate, sensual, pasionate and dominant in the bedroom; philosophically intellectual, and open to communication.

Adam Engst, once a board member for the first incarnation of XNS, explains: First, as we discovered, it's nearly impossible to create a new standards organization from scratch, and since the entire point of standards is that everyone agrees to them, it makes a lot more sense to work with existing standards organizations.
As a result, the core technologies that lay under XNS now reside with OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), a non-profit, international consortium that focuses on standards relating to electronic commerce.
Second, XNS was split into two separate parts: XRI (eXtensible Resource Identifier) and XDI (XRI Data Interchange).
