The XP-55 Ascender was a prototype fighter aircraft built by Curtiss.
Poorly armed and somewhat unstable in flight, the Ascender's performance was deemed acceptable, but not significantly better than conventional designs.
A highly unusual design for its time, it had a canard configuration, with a pusher prop and two vertical tails.

Although modern canard-wing aircraft are known to be highly stable and difficult to stall, the XP-55 was extraordinarily unstable and possessed unpredictable stall characteristics.
The aircraft is on long-term loan from the National Air and Space Museum to the Air Zoo, whose expert restoration personnel have almost returned this Ascender to its original appearance.

Czech Model's XP-55 Ascender is a well-done kit of an interesting aircraft that is highly distinctive when it is complete and sitting on your display shelf.
The second XP-55 (42-78846) is the only surviving Ascender and is now in the National Air and Space Museum's collection awaiting restoration.
Curtiss named their XP-55 the Ascender; however, its tail first design led to its nickname, the 'Ass-ender.'

One of the most unusual Army Air Forces research projects to be revealed to the public by the Air Technical Service Command is the Curtiss XP-55 Ascender, a tail-first, pusher fighter.
The trials indicated that the XP-55 had satisfactory handling characteristics during level and climbing flight, but at low speeds and during landings there was a tendency on the part of the pilot to over-control on the elevators because of a lack of any useful "feel".
The name Ascender had originated as a joke on the part of a Curtiss engineer, a reference to the aircrafts rather odd design which was not appreciated by the congressional oversight committee.

The rather odd appearance of the XP-55 Ascender  was the result of the influx of large amounts of money to the Army Air Forces in 1940.  With the recognition that war was eminent, and that the U.S. Military was totally unprepared, the build up of hardware was finally funded.
On Nov. 15, 1943 Curtiss test pilot Harvey Gray proved the spin predictions to be very accurate.  On the third stall of the day the airplane pitched forward onto its back and that was all she wrote.  The engine promptly quit and after what must have been a very interesting 16,000ft.
Like most limited run efforts, this one will take some tender care to make it into the neat little funny looking airplane that will add variety to you collection.  If a corner of your shelves is reserved for the odd balls and what-ifs of aviation, you need this kit.

Yeah its the Crtiss XP-55 Ascender prototype pusher aircraft like the Northrop XP-56 Black Bullet, sometimes i get the confused but XP-56 is double engine, shorter, and wing tips are bent down.
Well apparently it was called the ascender because it looked as though it flew tail first.

It was designed to make use of the efficiencies of canard or "tail- first" designs, which make for lighter structures and thus (theoretically) better performance from the same powerplant.

Curtiss XP-55 "Ascender" -- This radical "tail" first canard was another plane which developed in response to the solicitation for advanced and unconventional aircraft proposals by the Air Corp. It was essentially a flying wing in a pusher configuration powered by the V-1710-95(F23R).
Curtiss XP-60A -- This was intended to be a modernization of the P-40 airplane.
The first of three prototypes flew in 1943, the performance achieved being 390 mph at 19,300 ft with a service ceiling of 34,600 ft. The advances by conventional aircraft and the development of the turbojet, along with the demands of high-priority production programs led to no interest in further development of the Ascender.
