XQuery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XQuery is a query language (with some programming language features) that is designed to query collections of XML data.
XQuery 1.0 is being developed by the XML Query working group of the W3C.
XQuery is a functional language consisting entirely of expressions.

 An introduction to XQuery
XQuery had its origins in a W3C-sponsored query language workshop held way back in 1998, in which representatives from industry, academia, and the research community gathered in Boston to present their views on the features and requirements they considered important in a query language for XML.
XQuery 1.0: An XML Query Language is the linchpin document of the set, but the other documents all contribute toward what is an astonishingly well-specified and comprehensively backstopped language.
XQuery Update Facility Requirements: The features that XQuery requires to be able to write new data into existing documents, as well as query against them.

 XML.com: What Is XQuery
XQuery is a powerful and convenient language designed for processing XML data.
XQuery gives you that ability, plus the ability to embed XML/HTML forms inside expressions, and to have them be the value of variables and parameters.
XQuery node values are immutable (you cannot modify a node after it has been created).

Essential XQuery - The XML Query Language   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
XQuery or XML Query Language is a W3C specification (http://www.w3.org/TR/xquery) designed to provide a flexible and standardized way of searching through (semi-structured) data that is either physically stored as XML or virtualized as XML (such as XML Views over relational data).
XQuery 1.0 does not use XML syntax (however, it is important to note that XQuery is case-sensitive language).
XQuery allows you to check if a value is of some specified sequence type, or do various things based on the type of the value, or cast the value from one type to the other.

PerfectXML.com - An Introduction to XQuery
XQuery is the first language to receive industry-wide attention and support.
The data model that XQuery uses is based on that of XPath and defines each XML document as a tree of nodes.
XQuery provides most of operators and functions that can also be found in other computer languages, including arithmetic operators, comparison operators, logical operators and sequence-related operators.

Fawcette.com - Get Ready for XQuery   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
XQuery's basic objective is to let you access a collection of real or virtual XML documents as you would a database.
XQuery's built-in data types conform to XML Schema Description Language (XSD) atomic and some derived data types, but queries don't require schemas for source documents.
XQuery offers seven types of expressions, but FLWR (pronounced "flower") expressions are the most interesting to data-oriented developers.

Xquery Lite   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Xquery Lite is a subset of the W3C's Xquery 1.0 language.
We may have several Xquery expressions in a return expression enclosed by brackets and each of them can be a full FLWR expression so we may have sub-queries using query variables as XML sources and producing some result.
Comment: The Xquery Lite 1.0 language doesn't have an IF statement yet (it is planned for 1.1) so we have to split the query in two parts one for the books with more than two authors and another part for the books with 2 or less authors.

XQuery's path expression syntax might be called an "extended subset" of XPath[4], where this oxymoron describes the fact that, while similar to XPath and defined in terms of XPath, it is decidedly not XPath.
XQuery is a work in progress; accordingly, it should not be criticized too heavily for underspecification.

Industry Standard: XQuery: A New Way to Search   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
XQuery provides a mechanism for efficiently and easily extracting information from relational databases, files, and other data sources, requiring only that those data sources provide an XML view of the data.
XQuery and XPath 2.0 are being developed by the same W3C Working Group, and XQuery actually includes XPath 2.0 as a subset.
XQuery is also unique as far as query languages go in that it has two syntaxes: a human-readable syntax and an XML syntax—that is, XML elements and attributes that express a query equivalent to the human-readable syntax.
