XTC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XTC are an influential new wave band from Swindon, England.
By this time, the punk rock movement was in full swing, and XTC had found their style, a unique brand of hyperactive pop mixed with funk, scrapheap, punk, ska, reggae, and art rock.
It is some measure of how liked he was by the XTC fanbase that they gave Moulding and Partridge pelters on the band's official forum for his departure — and some measure of their mutual respect for their fans and Gregory that the criticism went uncensored.

XTC made a name for themselves with a their own brand of 'new wave' music, played against the punk 'revolution' of the late 1970s.
XTC still had commercial pop songs up their sleeves and the album Black Sea was well received.
And it looked increasingly likely that Nonsuch would be their swansong as XTC effectively withdrew their labour for seven long years in an ultimately successful bid to finally free themselves from a contract with Virgin who for years had appeared at odds with what Partridge was trying to achieve for the band.

XTC was one of the smartest -- and catchiest -- British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s.
XTC continued to smooth out their edges on 1980's Black Sea, bringing in elements of mid-'60s Beatles and Kinks to their guitar-driven pop; thanks to the singles "Generals and Majors" and "Towers of London," it was the group's most successful American album, peaking at number 41 while reaching number 16 on the British charts.
XTC refused to tour for the record, which caused some tension between the band and Virgin, and was presumably the reason why "Love on a Farmboy's Wages" didn't make it past number 50 on the charts.

XTC's career seemingly came to a sudden halt when the pressures of touring became too much for Partridge and he ran offstage in the middle of a live performance in Paris, overcome by stage fright.
XTC aren't exactly known for holding back any absolutely incredible material from their albums (usually they just throw it all onto the platter and scream "EAT, KNAVES!") so a rarities collection from them pretty much amounts to a few first-rate songs surrounded by a lot of pointless live cuts, second takes and remixes.

Hailing from the bland English exurb of Swindon, XTC emerged from an early punk-manic phase to produce several ambitious and now-classic records: the spiky art-pop gems Drums and Wires and Black Sea, the flawed epic English Settlement and the exquisite pop pastorale Skylarking.
For many years a trio of Andy Partridge (guitar/vocals), Colin Moulding (bass/vocals) and Dave Gregory (keyboards/guitar), XTC — one band that made the description "clever" a criticism — is one of the last of England's original class of '77 still in active and unbroken existence.
With drummer Terry Chambers' departure, XTC next found themselves in a precarious position with their British record label, which was reportedly hesitant to release another brilliant but uncommercial album.

Although the refusal to tour and the difficulty XTC had in achieving higher than cult status may seem like justifiable reasons for a label's cold shoulder, the problems that XTC had with Virgin are a longer and more complex story than that.

But XTC fans can't possible go wrong: there's not too much duplication of album tracks other than a dance mix ("Cockpit Dance Mixture"), an alternate mix of "Respectable Street," and slightly different versions of "Ten Feet Tall" and "Scissor Man," all of which are well worth hearing again.
