An airborne assault of two Army infantry battalions is organized to reinforce the MEU attack to seize the airport.
In today’s environment of no-notice crisis and conflict, XVIII Airborne Corps forces (figure 5) must be capable of moving rapidly from widely dispersed staging areas overseas and in the continental United States deploying into a crisis or regional conflict and initiating an attack, all without pausing.
Given the nature of current and future fights, XVIII Airborne Corps is the ideal candidate to spearhead Army transformation.

  The XVIII Airborne Corps During WW II - Overview
The airborne Allied troops were to seize roads, bridges and the key communication cities of Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem, thus cutting Holland in half and clearing a corridor for British armoured and motorized columns all the way to the German border.
Although XVIII Airborne Corps achieved their objectives the plan was overly ambitious from a logistical standpoint and the operation did not achieve it ultimate objective.
Operation Varsity would be the last full scale airborne drop of World War II and the assignment went to the British 6th Airborne Division and the 17th Airborne Division with the 507th spearheading the assault dropping at the southern edge of the Diersfordter Forest, three mile northwest of Wesel.

XVIII Airborne Corps fought in Holland, Belgium, and Germany during the war, and was the command for Operation Varsity, the Anglo-American paradrop behind the Rhine.
During the Cold War, XVIII Airborne Corps continued to command Airborne forces in the United States and later became the Army's component of the Rapid Deployment Force in the 1980s.
It is expected that the entire XVIII Airborne Corps of four divisions will deploy to the Middle East in 75 days, with the 82nd Airborne Division arriving in 12 days, the 101st Airborne and 3rd Infantry arriving in 30 days, and the rest arriving another 45 days afterwards.

In fact, the Fort Bragg, N.C., based corps is giving up command of all its traditional divisions to become one of three specialized headquarters designated to command combat deployments to war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan.
The XVIII already gave up command of the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga., on Oct. 1 and is slated to give up control over the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y., next year.
Now, these corps headquarters will be on a rotation to become the headquarters element of a deploying task force of units and not have to worry about managing units at home base.

I was also assigned such odd jobs as the assistant adjutant, test control officer, court martial appointing officer, re-enlistment officer, message classification officer (a huge pain in the butt), and, of course, officer of the day (OD) on a rotating schedule.
As OD in a STRAC unit (Strategic Army Corps), I had to make one formal inspection and one surprise inspection of the troops on night guard duty and (theoretically) stay awake all night cooped up in the commo shack.
Nevertheless, apart from the semi-annual maneuvers (Desert Strike, Swift Strike) with the 82nd and 101st Airborne, and a couple of week-long training schools, the Army for me was basically one day of experience repeated 730 times.
