It was the smallest corps in the army.
At the Battle of Gettysburg, the XII Corps distinguished itself by its gallant defense of Culp's Hill on July 2 – 3, 1863.
Upon the discontinuance of the XII Corps, General Slocum was assigned to the command of the District of Vicksburg, but resumed the corps command—of the XX Corps—during the Atlanta Campaign, General Hooker having been relieved.

The first XX Corps, under the command of Alexander M. McCook, was organized in the aftermath of the Battle of Stones River in January 1863 from what had been the XIV Corps, or right wing of the army, at that battle.
The corps took part in a skirmish with Bragg's rearguard at Liberty Gap, Tennessee, during the Tullahoma Campaign in June 1863.
The corps fought valiantly throughout the Atlanta Campaign; after James B. McPherson was killed in the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, Oliver O. Howard was made commander of the army.

The corps was attached to the Department of Virginia under John A. Dix, and took part (along with VII Corps) in minor diversionary actions against Richmond during the Gettysburg Campaign.
This corps was created on October 10, 1863, from the remnants of XX and XXI Corps, both of which had suffered heavy casualties at Chickamauga.
During John B. Hood's Franklin-Nashville Campaign, General William T. Sherman left the IV (and XXIII Corps), under the overall command of General George H. Thomas, to defend Tennessee, and the corps was heavily engaged in the battles at Spring Hill, Franklin, and Nashville.

The idea is attributed to Gen. Philip Kearny who ordered the men in his sew a two-inch square of red cloth on their hats to avoid confusion on the battlefield.
This idea was adopted by Gen. Joseph Hooker after he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac, so any soldier could be identified at a distance.

This is definetly one of the reasons why they did not use so much breech-loading rifles during ACW.
And shooting 5 times faster DOES NOT mean you hit 5 times more enemies.
(At corps and army level the Prussian advantage is obvious because of their superior staff work.)
