XY (magazine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XY is a gay-youth oriented magazine published in the United States of America.
XY is a glossy, color magazine, published bi-monthly, and known best for its original photography, brazenly honest commentary on politics and culture, review of film, music and literature, reader contributions, advice on surviving young and gay, and a rather dark sense of humor.
This magazine is printed on matte paper, and is 'anti-porn' (in that they are arousing images but are not technically pornography since they don't include full nudity or sexual acts).

 Anti-male
However, I am very keen that XY be, or continue to be, relevant and meaningful to the majority of men in the men's movement, those men involved in personal growth, co-counselling communities, 12-step groups, nonviolence networks, fathers' groups, men's health projects, and so on.
XY magazine is not male-bashing, and (sometimes) it is patriarchy-bashing.
XY has published pieces on men's poor health, unemployment and isolation, emotional alienation, circumcision, the sexual abuse of men and boys, and the strains (and joys) of single fathering.

XY Magazine may stand out from the stacks of periodicals found on newsstands for the simple reason that it’s not afraid to address issues that other publications won’t touch.
XY was intended to provide a forum for young gay men to exchange ideas and information, and it delivers.
Eighty percent of the magazines are purchased on the newsstand and in bookstores, and the XY cover price of $6.95 makes it one of the most expensive gay magazines.

XY works hard to keep readers up to date on what the newest trends are in the young gay community, be it sushi or a new buzzword.
XY is packed with the hottest fashions for all kinds of young gay men, from the hyped out club kid to the conservative khaki preppie.
Since the magazine is still only on issue 22, back issues from a year ago were made during its initial "growth period", which means that the number of magazines published was quite low, making the past supply simply unable to meet the current demand.

XY has had its detractors, taken aback by its willingness to be real and not run away from important but potentially controversial issues: just what makes it meaningful reading for its target audience and those who care about the next generation of gay men.

UCSF Magazine: Holly Ingraham: Sex on the Brain
For either XY or XX children born with a mutant SF-1 gene, it is a life-threatening failure to control fluid volume and stress responses -- due to the absence of adrenal steroids -- that first brings the infants in for medical attention.
Before she began to focus on the role of SF-1 in the hypothalamus, Ingraham analyzed mice in which the SF-1 genes were "knocked out" and traced the biochemical and developmental chain of events that explains the XY female phenotype.
In addition to lacking testosterone, the SF-1-deficient XY fetus lacks two other important male developmental hormones, Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS), which causes the embryonic female reproductive tract to atrophy, and the insulin-like hormone 3 (INSL3), which causes the testes to descend.

In addition to its target audience, the magazine is unique in another respect: out of all the national gay magazines I've seen, it is indeed the most personal and intimate.
The saga of "XY" does seem to be a reflection of America's wobbly acceptance of gays.
