Potts model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In statistical mechanics, the Potts model, a generalization of the Ising model, is a model of interacting spins on a crystalline lattice.
The Potts model is related to, and generalized by, several other models, including the XY model, the Heisenberg model and the N-vector model.
The one dimensional Potts model may be expressed in terms of a subshift of finite type, and thus gains access to all of the mathematical techniques associated with this formalism.

XY model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like the Ising model, the XY model is one of the many highly simplified models in the branch of physics known as statistical mechanics.
The continuous version of the XY model is often used to model systems that possess order parameters with the same kinds of symmetry, e.g.
Topological defects in the XY model leads to a vortex-unbinding transition from the low-temperature phase to the high-temperature disordered phase.

XY model is defined as a set of spins at each site on a two-dimensional lattice interacting with their nearest neighbors via an exchange interaction.
A renormalization group analysis combined with duality in the model shows that at high temperature and high field, the vortices unbind as the magnetic field is lowered in a two-step process: strings of overturned spins first proliferate and then vortices unbind.
We have considered the symmetric periodic Anderson model where the dispersion of the d-band and the mixing term, is that of a 3-d cubic lattice.

Phase transition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most famous example is the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the two-dimensional XY model.
In the three-dimensional Ising model for uniaxial magnets, detailed theoretical studies have yielded the exponent α ∼ 0.110.
For example, mean field theory predicts a finite discontinuity of the heat capacity at the transition temperature, and the two-dimensional Ising model has a logarithmic divergence.

Soft phases in two-dimensional O(N) models.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It is generally believed by the statistical mechanics and quantum field communities that, unlike the xy-model, the classical Heisenberg O(N) model has exponentially decaying correlations at all temperatures.
While for the xy model it has been shown by Bricmont et al [3] that this expansion is indeed the correct asymptotic expansion in the thermodynamic limit, a proof for the classical Heisenberg model does not exist.
We gave arguments based on percolation theory [4] and on the structure of low-lying excitations (super-instantons) [5]; we discussed the weaknesses of the conventional arguments in [6].

Although the model provides a way to study the ordering tendency in the alloy based on an ab initio electronic structure calculation, it is deficient in capturing all the intricacies of the interplay between magnetic and chemical structure.
Monte Carlo studies of the frustrated classical planar or XY model on two dimensional Penrose and octagonal lattices reveal a high temperature paramagnetic state changing to a spin-glass phase as the temperature is lowered.
The locations and the ratio of the concentrations of Cu and Co atoms in the model are found to be important in determining the shape and the magnitude of the density of states at the Fermi level.

The usual definition of {\it percolation} in correlated models starts, in finite volume, with the probability of a connection to the boundary in the boundary conditions that optimize this probability.
In fact, for the $XY$ model, and several other of the models under consideration, both of these bounds follows because it can be proved, via correlation inequalities, that the $\bold 1^+$ state is exactly the state that produces the magnetization.

For the former, the sole prerequisite is that we have the means of computing the likelihood of each generated model: that is, for computing the probability of data given the model.
To run experiments over different model spaces one needs to: (a) write a generator SLP, (b) write a Prolog program that implements the likelihood function of a model given some input data, and (c) if desired, write programs for displaying the models on screen with graphics software.
Model is the representation of the model to be displayed, and Llhood is its log-likelihood.
