During the film, as Logan mocks the X-men's black uniforms, Cyclops replies: "Would you prefer yellow spandex?" This is a reference to Wolverine's black-and-yellow uniform from the comics.
The film features a group of comic book superheroes called the X-Men.
The film is also considered to be the patriarch of the current "Comic Book Movie Age" that Hollywood is experiencing, as this film's box office success helped such films as Spider-Man 1 and 2, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, The Punisher, Batman Begins, and Superman Returns to be produced.

A controversial move was to have Professor X relocate to space in 1986 to be with his beloved Lilandra, Majestrix of the Shi'ar Empire, making Magneto the head of the X-Men.

We tried to incorporate these things into X2, but there was just too much going on in the film already and had we added all of the scenes that we wanted to add, the film would have ended up being 4 hours long.
Sprinkled throughout the film are many references to other mutants we have yet to officially meet, for instance in the bar scene, a TV is showing a debate on the mutant situation and one of the debaters is named Dr. Hank McCoy, which is the real name of the blue-furred behemoth known as Beast.
In North America, the film earned $85.6 million dollars in its opening weekend, making it the fourth biggest debut in history, right behind Spider-Man and the two Harry Potter films.

Men in Black - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In UFO conspiracy theories, the term Men in Black (MIBs), also known as Men in Gray, are alleged to be men dressed in black suits claiming to be government agents who attempt to harass or threaten UFO witnesses into silence.
The men suggest—or the witnesses assume—that they are government agents, and often flash convincing-looking badges and demand that the witness recant their story or hand over photographs or physical evidence of a UFO.
The men are often reported driving large, late-model cars, typically Cadillacs; in rare cases, they are reportedly seen in black helicopters.

For the X-Men franchise, unlike other well known film series, he had little to expand upon from Kamen's original.
For the sequel, Fox decided to set a record by globally releasing the film on the same date in 93 nations, saturating the market with nearly 9,000 prints of the film.
A refreshing aspect of Ottman's work is his choice to stay true to orchestral instrumentation in his creativity rather than giving in to the urge to score this film as many probably would have done: with electric guitars.

 Turner Writing Magneto X-Men Spin-Off - ComingSoon.net
The original "X-Men" film began with a prologue that showed Magneto as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis, and that is the period in which the new film will take place.
"I pitched a film that is almost 'The Pianist' meets 'X-Men,' about a guy who, after watching his family slaughtered, has an awakening of his powers and seeks revenge," Turner said.
Since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years, it is not clear whether McKellen will be in the film at all, says the trade.

The GATE :: Review of 'X2: X-Men United'
It's also easy to see why this film is finally an almost perfect comic book film adaptation, basically the best comic book film of all time, and a pleasure to watch whether you're an old X-Men fan, or just a regular schmoe off the street.
The X-Men are a group of mutants - men and women who have special abilities that they were born with, like being able to heal a bullet wound in a few moments, or being able to control the weather.
His first scene in the film is just jaw-dropping when you see what he can do, but that doesn't change the fact that every bit of dialogue with him is intensely powerful.

 X2 (2003)
This is why I object (in the title) to people criticising this film for "lack of character development" etc. Many of the characters WERE developed in the first film.
So the mutant phenomenon was well explained, the characters and their abilities introduced, and the plot (which actually had a story, unlike many action flicks) was carried out smoothly.
The second film, however, had to concentrate (naturally) on more characters and a more thorough story.

But what hamstrings this film is that it has to be a scene-setter for the inevitable Return of the X-Men, Revenge of the X-Men and of course, X-Men: The Phantom Menace.
Plotwise, it beats action film rival Gone in 60 Seconds hands down (in that X-Men actually HAS a plot) and undoubtedly it contains more original ideas in 5 minutes than the whole of M:I2.
The special effects, are of course, spectacular, but the action scenes are curiously limp despite the fact that the big confrontation takes place at the Statue of Liberty.

Some of the X people (sorry, the title is gender-inaccurate: not all of the X-men are men) see this as the first step to their imprisonment and irradication, particularly the one named Magneto, who watched his family being herded toward death chambers in Nazi Germany (where they also had a penchant for registration).

 X2: X-Men United (2003): Reviews
Has its flaws, but is overall a wonderfully entertaining film, and gets me excited for the 3rd one and the wolverine spin-off.
All the same, X2 and recent action adventures like it constitute a mutation in their own right: fast-paced, slow-witted movies in which the impact is the message; impersonal movies that deny any need for characterization; disjointed movies that make no apologies -- and pay no penalties -- for making no sense.
There are simply too many characters to get a handle on, and the sheer proliferation of special effects offers Singer a license so unfettered that most of the mutants act not according to their natures but purely on the ground of what, at that juncture, looks most groovy.

The film relies on one central conceit: that we live in a world where some people, called mutants, are born with genetic defects that give them superhuman powers.

 7/24/00: X-Men: Insert Pun Here
The success of the film's technical sheen extends to the contributions of the costume and set designers, as well as from the great cinematographer Newton Thomas Siegel (Three Kings), but unfortunately not to the orchestral score by Michael Kamen.
The film front-loads itself very heavily right away, with an opening sequence set in a Polish internment camp in WWII that's supposed to set up Magneto's ostensible misanthropy.
It's too bad that the schedule of the film was so compressed, because the preproduction cutting is, at times, painfully apparent (the result of a 160-odd- minute rough-cut being trimmed down to less than 100 minutes).

 DVD Times - X-Men 2
The first X-Men film can largely be held responsible for the resurgence of comic book movies filling multiplexes, it’s doubtful we’d be seeing the likes of Daredevil, Hellboy or Constantine if it had been a failure, and surely its success spurred studios on to breathe new life into the Superman and Batman franchises.
But you feel like in the comics Wolverine’s story would have been told through its own 4 part spin off miniseries, rather than in the main X-Men comic, and it’s the breadth of characters on show here that ultimately stops the film from being great.
Wolverine, however, finished the first film no more informed about his adamantium endoskeleton or his memory loss than he started, and it is that story that has become the focus of the second film.
