Metacentric height - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Technically, there are different metacentric heights for any combination of pitch and roll motion, depending on the moment of inertia of the waterplane area of the ship around the axis of rotation under consideration, but they are normally only calculated and stated as specific values for the limiting pure pitch and roll motions.
The metacentric height is important because the righting force is proportional to the metacentric height times the sine of the angle of heel.
The distance between the centre of gravity and the metacentre is called the metacentric height, and is usually between one and two metres.

 Vowel Theories
Vowels are dispersed in the phonetic space (tongue position, rounding) in such a way as to maximize auditory differences among the vowels.
When phoneticians listen to a audio recording of a vowel in an unknown language that is not found on the primary cardinal vowel "slice", they may not be able to tell whether the the vowel is a front rounded or a back unrounded vowel--they cannot separate position in the space from rounding.
Vowels were assumed to be spaced at auditorily equal intervals of tongue position.
