 History
In this atmosphere, the Jesuit Father John Larkin, S.J., boldly opened a school for Catholic boys in the basesment of a purchased Protestant church at Elizabeth and Walker Streets in lower Manhattan in the late summer of 1847.
At the suggestion of then Bishop John Hughes, the school was renamed in honor of a Jesuit saint, "The College of St. Francis Xavier." One year later the first church was built on 16th Street.
The school grew rapidly and in 1861 was granted its own charter by the State of New York.

The Mass took place at St. Xavier Church, 607 Sycamore St., located next to the original site of the Athenaeum, the learning institute that marked the beginning of both Xavier University and St. Xavier High School.
