Xekong - Destination Guide - Hotel Near   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In 1984, a wide expanse of jungle was cleared of trees and graded flat and the town of XEKONG was born.
Founded partly because nearby Ban Phon was deemed no longer habitable owing to unexploded ordnance (UXO), Xekong has something of a frontier feel about it, but it is the departure point for a very scenic journey downriver to Attapu.
In addition, there is a disturbing beasty lurking in Xekong's waterways: the pa pao is a blowfish with a piranha-like appetite and, according to locals, a particular fondness for lopping off the tip of the male member.

Community-Based Forest Management for Sustainable Development in the Upper Xekong Watershed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
This project is piloting community-based forestry to ensure forest conservation and sustainable development in the upper Xekong watershed, Xekong Province, Lao PDR.
The forests of Xekong are important for protection of the Xekong River watershed, as a resource for community livelihoods, and as a home to globally important biodiversity.
In watershed areas such as Xekong, such degradation threatens not only local communities that are dependent on forest resources, but also downstream communities that rely on continued watershed function to regulate seasonal water flows.

While so me schools are still under water, those in Xekong province are still closed because people are involved with farming work, said the Deputy Director of Xekong Education Service, Mr Phosay Phimmasone last week.
But many schools in Lamam district, Xekong province, had been unable to complete repair work on time because most people were busy working on farms and needed their children's assistance, said Mr Phosay.
Some villagers' efforts were directed solely towards farming, as they were too poor to consider the educational needs of their children, he pointed out.
