Xenix was not sold directly to end users, rather than Microsoft licensing it to computer manufacturers who would then port it to their systems.
Xenix varied from its System 7 origins by incoporating elements from BSD, and soon possessed the most widely installed base of any UNIX flavor due to the popularity of the inexpensive x86 processor, although the port created for Tandy computers proved to be more robust.
Microsoft is said to have used Xenix on VAX minicomputers extensively within their company as late as 1992.

Xenix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Xenix was a version of the Unix operating system, licensed by Microsoft from ATandT in the late 1970s.
Trusted Xenix was a variant developed by Trusted Information Systems which incorporated the Bell-LaPadula model of multilevel security, and had a multilevel secure interface for the STU-III secure communications device (that is, an STU-III connection would only be made available to applications running at the same privilege level as the key loaded in the STU-III).
It was still in use at least as of 1995.

Xenix serves as a workhorse for small businesses--places where you might find a dozen or so dumb terminals and a couple of printers plugged into a system running FoxBase or other small database system.
Xenix's networking support, while never very functional, no longer exists as an upgrade in any case--someone wanting to add even a single Xenix box to telnet or share services is out of luck.
Many Xenix users may be uncomfortable upgrading their unlimited-users license to a limited-user OpenServer system, or paying about $4,000 to upgrade to an unlimited-user OpenServer.

In spite of hdinit asking what size your hard disk is, detailed investigation into Xenix 3.0 reveals that it assumes that a Lisa 2/10 has a 10 MB drive, and a Lisa 2/5 has a 5 MB drive.
If you use a 5 MB drive on the built-in port of a 2/10, hdinit appears successful, but Xenix attempts to write past the end of the drive, generating an error and interfering with management of the file system.
Perhaps the Xenix 3.0 driver was written for an earlier version of the Apple ProFile Z8 software and the later versions also suffer from the differences.

XENIX was originally developed on a DEC Virtual Address Extension (VAX) running the Virtual Memory System (VMS) and a PDP-11 running UNIX V7, albeit now using Microsoft’s own in-house minicomputers, and then converted into assembly language specific to the new 16-bit Motorola 68000 and Intel 8086 microprocessors.
This put XENIX at the high end of the microcomputer market, which was still dominated by 8-bit machines, but well below the lowest end of the minicomputer market.

In 1980, Microsoft announces its XENIX operating system, an "enhanced version of the UNIX operating system." It is designed to run on Intel 8086, Zilog Z8000, Motorola M68000 and DEC PDP-11 series.
In the announcement, Microsoft also said they would port all of their existing software to XENIX (that is, develop new versions of the software that will run on XENIX), and that it would be able to run UNIX software as well.
They licensed XENIX to computer equipment manufacturers such as SCO, Tandy and Intel who sold it to consumers after branding it with their own name.
