Xenobiology - Open Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Xenobiology (also known as exobiology or astrobiology) is the term for a speculative field within biology which considers the possible variety of extraterrestrial life.
Although this is currently a speculative field, the presence of life in the rest of the Universe is a verifiable hypothesis (though it has yet to be verified), making xenobiology a valid field for scientific enquiry.
Xenobiology also figures in much science fiction as the fictional science of the biology of alien organisms.

Astrobiology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Astrobiology is an interdisciplinary field, combining aspects of astronomy, biology and geology, which considers the question of whether extraterrestrial life exists and if so, then what are its origin, distribution, and evolution.
It comes from the Greek words astron = star, bios = life and logos = word/science), and is also known as exobiology (Greek: exo = out) or xenobiology (Greek: xenos = foreign).
Exobiology and xenobiology are terms also found in science fiction, although typically such terms refer to the speculative biology of an extraterrestrial.

With the outbreak of the Dominion War and subsequent closure, Starfleet was then able to focus on the Borg threat once again, and began sending out many of its Earth-based officers to starships to serve as specialists in their areas and assist the Science teams in their efforts.

Xenobiology is similar to biology in that it includes knowledge of organisms and their 'inner workings', but it is similar to Alien Worlds in that, from observation, it allows a xenobiologist to examine and understand extraterrestrial life forms (the skill Bishop used when examining the dead facehugger and the effects of the acid blood).
Also, similar to Alien Worlds, a xenobiologist is aware of standard quarrantine procedures when procuring a xenomorph specimen.

2) The authors point out that the subject area of this discussion is often called "astrobiology", although in science fiction circles (where the topic has arguably been thought through more carefully than it has been in academic circles) the term "xenobiology" is favored.
The authors suggest that the history of science indicates that any discussion of alien life will be misleading if it is based on the presumption that contemporary science is the ultimate in human understanding.
