The main plot in Xenogears ultimately centers around the long and complex tale of Fei Fong Wong, an amnesia-stricken martial artist and painter who lives in the peaceful village of Lahan, and his relationship with a female officer from the mysterious military nation of Solaris named Elhaym Van Houten.
Xenogears also makes use of an 8-angle rotatable camera, available via the L1 and R1 buttons, which can be used to navigate the variety of locales found in the game, more specifically the towns and cities.
My other gripe with Xenogears is the fact that, despite its fairly decent English translation, which is the most direct translation I've seen from Square in years, the text display speed is so unbelievably slow, presumably due to the technical limitations of the PlayStation hardware.

Xenogears was crowned "RPG game of the year" a little later after it's release, and I don't disagree at all.
Xenogears has the most innovative fighting engine yet, the fighting engine is alot different than any other RPG fighting engine you have ever seen.

I say lengthy with no exaggeration- Xenogears takes a lot of time to thresh out it's very complex and dramatic story, made a bit longer even by the fact that you cannot skip cinemas (this is necessary, in the long run however).
The fighting in Xenogears, like other RPGs, is still turn-based, though the use of AP points and selectable attacks and combos gives a new twist to the usual "Attack" and "Defend" options.
Xenogears also is the first RPG from Square (I think) that actually shows bed scenes (though after the act) and implied sexual relations.

Xenogears was an epic game that broke a lot of moulds, but yes; if you're an RPG traditionalist, and stats and battles are what float your boat then a heavily story based RPG is probably not going to be for you...
Xenogears, (like Xenosaga, except not as abusive in holding back the story) is a love or hate game.
Anyway, xenogears is by far the best game i have ever played, and there is an obvious abundance of gameplay, not to mention the gameplay is very fun.
