Fundamental to Biblical interpretation is the appropriate transliteration of primitive terms, and just as with the etymology of the term "spirit" comes from "breath" or "vapour", the term "tongues of fire," is almost certainly a use of fire as a metaphor for markedly increased and radiant powers of speech during the Pentecost.
The "sign of tongues" refers to xenoglossia, in which listeners hear their native language by means of divine power.
Spiritists argued that some cases were actually cases of Xenoglossia (when one speaks in a language unknown to him).

Xenoglossia: This is the ability to spontaneously speak a foreign language without first having learned it, or even been exposed to it.
This term is derived from two Greek words: Xenos, which means "foreign" or "foreigner", and glõssai, which means "tongues" or "languages." Stories of xenoglossia are well known, particularly within the Pentecostal movement and psychic research.
But one source claims that "no scientifically attested case of zenolalia has come to light." Still another writer states that essentially all claims of xenoglossia are hoaxes.

 Xenoglossia
This is said to be supported by the stages of the secondary personalities, who may or may not realise that their original bearer has died but who frequently describe a previous life at an earlier date (often, naturally, at a remote location).
Of course, even if some cases of xenoglossia should prove to be genuinely mysterious or interesting, it does not follow that this explanation is the correct one; there may be other simpler explanations.
These examples are thus liable to the suspicions surrounding ‘false memories’ associated with other phenomena heavily reported in that setting (memories of UFO abductions, of childhood sexual abuse, of childhood involvement in Satanic rituals, etc).

Speaking a language foreign to one's native tongue without having ever learned it or ever having heard it is technically called xenoglossia, and not quite the same thing as [biblical] glossolalia.
The unlikelihood of xenoglossia does not rule out the claim that glossolalists are speaking some type of language.
After all, one would not expect the tongues of angels to be as culturally or geographically specific as German or Spanish.

The OED dates its first appearance to 1914; it’s from Greek xenos, stranger or foreigner, plus glossa, language; another spelling is xenoglossia.
But from a language point of view the difference is profound: in xenoglossy the implication is that a real language is being spoken that is intelligible to native speakers and in which the person can converse, while glossolalia is a succession of meaningless syllables interpretable only through faith.

Mirabile translatu: Translating women and the miraculous in the later Middle Ages (Margery Kempe, Geoffrey Chaucer)
The dissertation explores how illiterate holy women in the later Middle Ages were imagined to serve as both Latin and vernacular translators through the gift of xenoglossia, the sudden, miraculous ability to speak, understand, write, or read a foreign language.
Because gifts of xenoglossia could potentially challenge the clergy's control over scriptural access and interpretation, the clerical authors of the women's vitae strongly emphasized the limits experienced by the holy women in their practice and performance of their xenoglossic gifts, thereby demonstrating that the women translated in socially acceptable ways.
The fourth chapter, “Translating Women in The Canterbury Tales: Xenoglossia in the Tales of Custance and Canacee,” explores how Chaucer adapts the popular trope of women's Latinate and vernacular xenoglossia in order to explore questions of women's “appropriate” practice of translation in the genres of romance and hagiographic romance.
