  Volume 21 No. 1
The Anguioidea McDowell and Bogert 1954 is rejected because there is no evidence that indicates that Xenosauridae and Anguidae are closer to one another than either is to the Varanoidea.
Neither the Xenosauridae nor the Anguidae could be derived from one another.
The Anguimorpha is composed of three monophyletic taxa whose interrelationships are unresolvedÑthe Xenosauridae, the Anguidae and the Varanoidea.

These specimens were described and illustrated by Li (1991) who placed them in “Xenosauridae.” The anterior dentition in Li’s (1991, figure 2B) appears to have acrodont implantation, suggesting a more likely affinity with Acrodonta.
Disarticulated dentaries referred to Oxia karakalpakiensis from the Cretaceous of Uzbekistan were assigned to “Xenosauridae” by Nessov and Gao (1993), but in a subsequent detailed analysis Gao and Nessov (1998) recognized that definitive placement of these elements was problematic.
A possible relationship with Xenosauridae was acknowledged in the original description (Borsuk-Bialynicka 1985) and appears to have been accepted a few years later (Borsuk-Bialynicka 1991a, 1991b).

Xenosaurs, whose name comes from Greek words meaning "strange lizards," where a mystery for many years, as zoologists weren't sure with what other lizards to place them.
Many herpetologists include the lone Chinese crocodile lizard, Shinisaurus crocodilurus, in the Xenosauridae because of great anatomical similarity; others place Shinisaurus in its own family, which we follow here.
Xenosaurs are found in a variety of habitats, generally in or near pine forests and in the hilly regions that get at least some regular seasonal rain.

The Xenosauridae consist of the Central American genus Xenosaurus and of two fossil North American genera, Exostinus and Restes, which are very close to Xenosaurus.
(1999) recently suggested to split the Xenosauridae into two separate families, the Sinisauridae and Xenosauridae, because of DNA sequence differences (see tree on the Anguidae page).

 ADW: Xenosauridae: Information
Xenosaurus (4 species) has a New World distribution and is found in rock crevices of mountainous regions of southeastern Mexico and Central America, while Shinisaurus (1 species) is Old World and found only in a small riparian area of southern China.
Xenosauridae is united by the shape of the frontals, loss of the second epibranchials, and a widening of the postorbital branch of the jugal.
Xenosauridae belongs to the larger group Diploglossa (=Anguioidea), which also includes Anguidae (alligator lizards) and Anniellidae, although Diploglossa is probably not a natural group.

General similarities in cranial and scale characters led McDowell and Bogert (1954) to unite S.
In an expanded treatment of the cranial myology and osteology Rieppel (1980) concluded that retention of these two taxa within Xenosauridae was the most parsimonious explanation of the available data, but that his data provided evidence of a very early split between the two.
(1988) listed 12 synapomorphies uniting the two taxa into Xenosauridae, but some of these characters are now interpreted to be plesiomorphic or to apply to more inclusive groups of anguimorphs (Gao and Norell 1998; see also Hu et al.
