Xenotime - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Xenotime is used chiefly as a source of yttrium and erbium and fine crystal specimens are valued by collectors.
Xenotime has a variable habit: It may be prismatic (stubby or slender and elongate) with dipyramidal terminations, in radial or granular aggregates, or rosettes.
Xenotime is dichroic with pink, yellow, or yellowish brown seen in the extraordinary ray, and brownish yellow, grayish brown or greenish brown seen in the ordinary ray.

Xenotime and monazite have paragenetic relationships with S^sub 1^ and S^sub 2^ minerals that are similar to those of kyanite and coarse-grained biotite, and indicate they also formed during the peak of metamorphism.
Xenotime from the sandstone sample probably includes diagenetic rather than detrital material, because one analysis is comparable with the c.
As the average xenotime age is somewhat dependent on data exclusions, we have used an averaged age of 1205 Ma to define the age of peak metamorphism, with an expanded uncertainty (c.

Xenotime overgrowths occur on zircon because the two minerals are isostructural.
Therefore, the age of diagenetic xenotime is only very slightly younger than the age of deposition of the enclosing sediments.
Of particular interest are improved methods for identification of xenotime overgrowths, and for extraction of zircon+xenotime intact from rocks and thin sections.

 XENOTIME (Yttrium Phosphate)
Xenotime is one of the very few minerals, let alone words, that starts with the letter X; a good word to remember in some word games.
Also of note is that xenotime is one of the few phosphate minerals that does not contain water molecules, hydroxides or chlorides.
The crystals of xenotime are similar to zircon and can easily be confused with the duller lustered, less transparent samples of zircon.

Description: Xenotime is a rare accessory mineral generally found in complex pegmatites.
MARATHON COUNTY: Xenotime has been reported as yellow to brown crystals up to 1 mm in diameter in pegmatites of the Nine Mile pluton, such as are exposed in the "rotten granite" quarries south of Rib Mountain (sec.

Samples with matrix xenotime are restricted to the garnet zone; Y concentration of these garnets generally decreases smoothly from core to rim.
Xenotime may also be present in reaction zones around garnet.
This coupling is of great advantage in that it may be used to: (1) calibrate sensitive geothermometers and geobarometers, (2) identify particular regions of garnet grown in different garnet-producing reactions over a range of grades, and (3) reveal portions of pelite reaction history invisible to major elements.

ICP-MS/TIMS ANALYSES OF MONAZITES AND XENOTIME FROM MIGMATITES IN THE AAR MASSIF   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Isotope dilution U-Th-Pb age determinations using a 205Pb/235U spike, and no chemical separation, were made on two 10-30 mg monazite grains and one xenotime grain from a sample of migmatites in the Aar Massif, Swiss Alps.
The xenotime grain yielded discordant results: 222 ± 14 Ma, 341 ± 14 Ma and 2890 ± 90 Ma, probably indicating its Alpidic formation with radiogenic Pb inherited from Precambrian zircon, and incorporation of additional Th.
As the xenotime analysis did not show this effect (and no-chemistry zircon single grain Pb analyses don’t either) the effect may be due to abundant Ce on the filament: Ce could act as an electron donor preventing the formation of Pb+.

 xenotime --  Encyclopædia Britannica
Used as component for some electronic devices, it occurs in products of nuclear fission and naturally in minerals gadolinite, monazite, xenotime, and others.
Its radioactive isotope is used to determine the age of meteorites relative to the age of Earth.
It is found in minerals xenotime and euxenite and in the products of nuclear fission.

Xenotime from the Prichard Formation was dated in April 2003; the age agrees with independent age information, proving that the method works.
Xenotime/zircon overgrowths will be identified using the SEM and extracted (as 2-mm size plugs) from polished thin sections using a micro diamond wire saw.
Based on poor results with ferruginous samples (zircon and xenotime are obscured in SEM backscatter view), future efforts will concentrate on well-sorted, clean (i.e.

Xenotime is largely restricted to garnet cores, but may occur as isolated matrix grains, or grain-boundary decorations on leucosome apatite.
Rare matrix xenotime is zoned with high Dy cores and high Yb overgrowths.
Mnz (1) may be inherited, or represent a pre-garnet-zone thermal event unrecorded elsewhere in the sample.

imaging of polished thin sections to detect xenotime overgrowths on detrital zircons,
Proposals should have a strong focus on application of the technique to solve geologic problems; possibilities include determining ages of Precambrian (i.e., unfossiliferous) sedimentary rocks, dating hydrothermal activity related to alteration halos around ore deposits, dating petroleum-bearing sediments that are overmatured with altered microfossils, and directly dating fossil-bearing sediments.
