Beautiful Subpixel Rendering on Linux HOWTO
Xft is a client to freetype; modern X applications are clients of Xft.
Xft is part of the fontconfig package, which is part of Xorg.
The problem is that Xft uses its antialiasing renderer to render each subpixel to an 8-bit gray value.

An Xft Tutorial Keith Packard XFree86 Core Team, SuSE Inc. Introduction This is a quick tutorial about the basics of Xft; a comparison to core X routines is given along with some brief examples 1.
Xft separates the notion of matching fonts for listing from the list of which values are desired by the application.
Xft takes a pattern and a list of element names and returns an array of patterns formed by extracting the desired pattern elements from available fonts which match the specified pattern.

 An Xft (and FreeType) Hack
These modifications of Xft and FreeType attempt to improve the quality of on-screen antialiased fonts in KDE and other applications or environments that make use these libraries.
With the modified version of Xft that I've posted, fonts on the screen are more consistent from size to size, and the kearning (spacing from character to character) is much improved.
I am currently working on a hack of the Xft library which improves the appearence and readability of serif fonts at low point sizes.

XFT was developed to compensate for the sudden convergence problems exhibited by other parametric methods.
XFT works as a high-resolution spectral estimator for short signals, giving higher resolution than the DFT before the DFT has converged.
In this example, XFT is able to resolve a doublet that is not discernable in the DFT.

Xft configuration   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Xft is an interface to the freetype rasterizer written by Keith Packard, member of the XFree86 Project, Inc. It allows applications to use fonts from the new X render extension using a unified font naming scheme.
The Xft extension will now try to patch this pattern to all of the fonts available in the system.
For some reason some (sybol) fonts are not correctly recognized, and Xft will show your default font, or a font which has the closest match (which is generally not what you mean at all).

xft(3): X FreeType interface library - Linux man page
Xft is a simple library designed to interface the FreeType rasterizer with the X Rendering Extension.
An XftFont is the primary data structure of interest to programmers using Xft; it contains general font metrics and pointers to the Fontconfig character set and pattern associated with the font.
As of version 2, Xft has become relatively stable and is expected to retain source and binary compatibility in future releases.

HiddenWires - Vutec Introduces Vision XFT Triplex: SilverStar, Flat-Fixed, Horizontal Masking System
Vision XFT achieves this optimum viewing experience by being designed by Vutec to leave no space between the masking panels and projection screen.
Equally important, Vision XFT is able to maintain constant image height for 4:3 NTSC TV, 16:9 HDTV, and 2.35:1 CinemaScope aspect ratios through an intelligent motor control system that has been electronically integrated into the product by Vutec engineers.
Home theater owners using Vision XFT have a wide range of screen fabrics to choose among, starting with Vutec's patented SilverStar(tm) and its unique gain of 6.0, 180 degree off-axis viewing, no color shift, ambient light rejection, increased contrast, and bright, vivid colors.

Xft was designed from the start to support scalable fonts well, including anti-aliasing.

Xft uses the fontconfig library to locate fonts and to influence some details how they are rendered.

Make-Doc: XFT - Xmlrpc File Transfer and Chat
XFT is a combined server/client application that allows one to both serve and receive files using xmlrpc based calls for communication, and async i/o for file transfer.
The utility is written in Rebol and uses the xmlrpc libraries written by Andreas Bolka, the async protocol written by Gabriele Santilli, Maarten Koopmans, and Romano Tenca, and the async-call by Nenad Rakocevic.
This is particularly true for XFT as it downloads files in packets and may well prevent virus scanners from picking up infected files.

Xft has no configuration mechanism itself, rather it relies upon the fontconfig library to configure and customize fonts.
Installing a font for use by Xft applications is as simple as copying a font file into one of these directories.

However, at present application code has no way to determine whether or not Xft support was enabled when Tk was built.
This TIP (or something like it) is a prerequisite for a script-level implementation of TIP #145, which will need to distinguish whether or not Xft is in use.

Font Configuration and Customization for Open Source Systems
Xft was originally designed to connect fonts rasterized with the FreeType[freetype] library with the X Render Extension[render] to the X window system[x].
During a subsequent redesign of Xft, the configuration and customization portions of the library were extracted and moved into a separate library with the idea that they would be more useful if shared with other applications.
The need to embed the parser for the custom Xft configuration language made it evident that a standard configuration file format was required.
