Xfwm - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Unix computing, Xfwm is a window manager for the X Window System.
It provides its own compositing manager, the first of its kind when released.
Xfwm also supports keyboard shortcuts and is fully themeable.

xfwm's copyright is considered to be the same as twm's.
If the module is still active when xfwm is told to quit, then xfwm will close the communication pipes and wait to receive a SIGCHLD from the module, indicating that it has detected the pipe closure and has exited.
If xfwm expects to find a built-in function in a command, but fails, it will check to see if the specified command should have been "Function (rest of command)" or "Module (rest of command)".

Xfce is somewhat similar to the commercial CDE, but has been getting a little farther away from that comparison with each new version (it was completely re-written twice, between versions 2 and 3, and then again for version 4).
Xfwm is unique in 4.2 in that it integrates its own compositing manager.
Other compositing managers exist, but have been rather unstable, and Xfce was the first to integrate its own compositing manager into the window manager, and at its inception, many users called it the most stable one available.

Those applications are called "modules" and must be started from xfwm itself or from xfce.
In order to start XFwm's modules, xfce has to be started as a module itself (This is the default unless you've started xfce from the command line).
Use the keyword Module to indicate that your command has to be considered as a module.

As simple as it is, the color symbol replacement table of the XPM format is not powerfull enough to achive the nice color gradients seen in most recent themes.
Xfwm 4.2 includes yet another functionality that gives real nice result while being still compatible with the previous theme format: It composes the final image from the XPM file and it colors replacement table, and another PNG file with transparency, if present.

Now, this morning, I go to boot up and find my xinit fails with this message: xfwm: relocation error: /usr/X11/lib/libXft.so.1: undefined symbol: FcPatternCreate A quick check with objdump shows that FcPatternCreate is defined in libfontconfig.so.
So it looks like I have to get an updated xfwm that is linked with the newer fontconfig.

How do I tell xfwm that the panels are supposed to > be on all workspaces?
I noticed this too - the gnome-panel doesn't work so well with xfwm, but xfwm does come with its own panel: xfce4-panel which you may/may not have installed.
Nevertheless, I don't much like the xfce4-panel, so I would like to know of a way of making the gnome-panel stay on all workspaces when using xfwm...

For XFce4 4.2 we have to drop the panel and the xffm packages and modify the install location of the xfwm theme, that's all!!
Also, will there be any more theming, or are things pretty much where they'll stay for Xfce?
Is there no need to theme the panel and the file manager anymore?
