Alpha Ursae Majoris (Duhbe) owes it's "alpha" designation not to preeminent brightness (as is usually the case in constellations), but to it's position as the first of the seven stars of the "big dipper".
Gamma Ursae Majoris (Phecda) forms, with Beta, the bottom of the dipper's handle, and is a blue-white star very similar to Beta: 90 light years away, 75 times as bright as our sun, and also a true member of the dipper cluster.
Xi Ursae Majoris (Alula Australis) derives the "Alula" portion of it's name from the Arabic for "the first spring"; it shares this name with the star Nu Ursae Majoris, just 1.6 degrees to the north, which is known as Alula Borealis.

Also known as Xi (or Ksi) Ursae Majoris, Alula Australis is derived from the Arabic for "first spring" or leap "south" of the "Gazelle" (whose stars have since been gathered up in Constellation Leo Minor), in combination with Alula Borealis ("north") or Nu Ursae Majoris.

It lies in the southeastern corner (11:41:03.02+34:12:05.89, ICRS 2000.0) of Constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear, which also encompasses the Big Dipper or Plow (Plough) -- east of Alula Borealis (Nu Ursae Majoris) and northeast of Alula Australis (Xi or Ksi Ursae Majoris).
As 61 Ursae Majoris has become one of the top 100 target stars for NASA's planned Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF), images of this star and its position relative to the Milky Way in Earth's night sky are now available from the TPF-C team.
61 Ursae Majoris is a yellow-orange main sequence dwarf star of spectral and luminosity type G8 Ve, with about 81 percent of Sol's mass, 84 to 89 percent of its diameter (Morossi and Malagnini, 1985, page 369; and Johnson and Wright, 1983, page 673), and around 57 percent of its luminosity.

 Klarus, 61 Ursae Majoris III
A fairly young solar system, with planets subjected to frequent meteor impacts and several asteroid belts on their way to settle down.
Regarded as a somewhat risky investment (but much better than the nearby Xi Ursae Majoris), K4H together with Birnam Ecotech set up a terraforming operation on the prebiotic terrestrial third planet together with an extensive automatic long-range impact defense.
The terraforming operation went well, and Praeclarus was opened for colonization as early as 1512 (although full terraforming still required 200 years).

We discuss the long-term behaviour of the triple system Xi Ursae Majoris (ADS 8119 = WDS 11182+3132 = HIP 55203).
The initial conditions are the estimated masses of the components based on calculated orbital elements (Mason 1995) and the trigonometric parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos Catalogue.

Xi Ursae Majoris is only in the Gliese catalog, which gives an error of 13 milliarcseconds in its parallax, corresponding to a relative uncertainty of 13.5% in its distance.

In fact, you would have to be 4 years and 3 months old before your light hits its first star, as the nearest star to us – Proxima Centauri – is 4.22 Light Years away from us.
According to my RSS feed, the most recent star to be hit by my Light Cone is Xi Ursae Majoris which is 27.2 light years from the earth.
If we reverse the direction of the light, we can say that when we look at Xi Ursae Majoris in the night sky, we are looking at it as it was 27.2 years ago, and the more distant the object the further back in time we are looking.

Ursa Minor, the Little Bear, is not mentioned in Euphratean tablets, nor by Homer or Hesiod (800 BCE); there is evidence that it was originally a Phoeni-cian figure later adopted by the Greeks.
According to Strabo, the Greeks adopted the little bear about 600 BCE when Thales, who knew of its use by the Phoenicians, suggested it to the Greek mariners in place of Ursa Major, because Polaris, the star at the tip of his tail, was by then a better indicator of true North.

In Astrogator practice the French Arm is the name given to the series of trade routes running from Sol (Earth) to Eta Bootis (Aurore) at one terminal, and a branching line to Xi Ursae Majoris, Vogelheim and Pentapod space on the other terminal.
The French Arm is not completely correct terminology as the Vogelheim branch loops back into the "arm" creating a cluster.
