Xiangkhoang (Lao ຊຽງຂວາງ) is a province of Laos, located in the north-east of the country.
It was heavily bombed during the Vietnam War era.
Originally known as Muang Phuan the famous Plain of Jars is located here.

Drained principally by the Ngum River, a southward-flowing tributary of the Mekong River, the plain is characterized by narrow river valleys and limestone and sandstone hills ranging from 3,000 to 3,600 feet (900 to 1,100 m) in elevation.

The depopulation activities the Siamese carried out on the Plain of Jars and elsewhere in Xiangkhoang caused the remaining population to migrate eastward and southward, forming new villages in the upper reaches of the Nam Mat and around the northern extremities of the Nam Kading basin, around Muang Mo, Muang Mok, and Muang Ngan.
After being delayed on the roads from Xiangkhoang and Vientiane by the Franco-Laotian guerrillas (of whom the Hmong were particularly effective), two battalions of Japanese troops finally arrived in Louangphrabang on April 7.
In the spring of 1953, the Viet Minh overran almost all of Houaphan Province and portions of Phôngsali, Xiangkhoang, and Louangphrabang provinces.

Xiangkhoang was destroyed by bombing in 1969, and Xam Nua and Phôngsali were virtually depopulated.
The capital of Xiangkhoang was relocated twenty kilometers north to the village of Phônsavan.
Administrative centers of several districts were also relocated after 1975 in order to make them more central to all villages in the district.

The topography of Laos is largely mountainous, with elevations above 500 meters typically characterized by steep terrain, narrow river valleys, and low agricultural potential.
This mountainous landscape extends across most of the north of the country, except for the plain of Vientiane and the Plain of Jars in Xiangkhoang Province.
Temperatures range from highs around 40°C along the Mekong in March and April to lows of 5°C or less in the uplands of Xiangkhoang and Phôngsali in January.

 The Land of Laos
In the northern province of Xiangkhoang, the Plain of Jars (Lao: Thông Haihin; the name derived from large prehistoric stone jars discovered there) consists of extensive rolling grasslands rather than a true plain and provides a hub of communications.
The course of the river itself is severely constricted by gorges in northern Laos, but, by the time it reaches Vientiane, its valley broadens and exposes wide areas to flooding when the river breaches its banks, as it did in August 1960.
A few rivers in eastern Laos flow eastward through gaps in the Annamese Cordillera to reach the Gulf of Tonkin; the most important of these is the Ma River, which rises in Xiangkhoang province.

James Lewis of Marshall, Texas, and Maj. Arthur Baker of San Antonio were aboard one of four B-57B Canberra bombers on April 7, 1965, when the plane went down in cloudy weather during a mission over Xiangkhoang Province, Laos.
Lewis, the pilot, radioed that the plane was departing the target area, but there was no further radio or visual contact.
