Fa Ngum was a grandson of Souvanna ruler of Xieng Dong Xieng Thong and of Khun Lo He was exiled as a child the court of Angkor along with his father.
In 1352-1353 he conquered Muang Sing Huom Xieng Hung Pak Ou and Pak In 1353 he fought the ultimate battle his uncle near Xieng Dong Xieng Thong won becoming the undisputed master of the which he named Lan Xang.
By 1358 the boundaries of his were recognized as Simao in the north in the south Khorat in the west and the Red River in the east.

Xieng Khuan is a collection of compelling Buddhist and Hindu sculptures located in a meadow, 24km (15mi) south of Vientiane.
The mysterious Plain of Jars is an undeveloped area near Phonsavan in Xieng Khuang Province where huge jars of unknown origin are scattered, the biggest weighing as much as six tonnes (6.6 tons).
Thong Hai Hin, the biggest and most accessible site, has two pavilions and restrooms as well as the largest jar on the plain.

According to the Luang Prabang legend, the first name of Luang Parabang was Muang Swa, named after King Khun Xua around the eighth century, later known as Xieng Dong and Xieng Thong.
During the reign of King Fa Ngum between 1354 and 1372 A.D., Xieng Dong, and Xieng Thong cities were renamed Luang Prabang in the name of the gold image of Buddha, the Phrabang.

Night train to Lao Cai, at the border with China (207,000 dong = $15), motorcycle to the bus station (5,000), bus to Sapa (30,000, 1h 30').
To go to Laos you can leave from Danang at 19:30 ($25) or wait for the bus in Dong Ha (ticket from Sinh Cafe in Hue), but the bus won't arrive before 11pm if you are lucky.

Phra Muang Kaeo’s death in 1526 marked a period of successive trouble which may have ended in 1546, when Setthathiraj from Lan Xang was crowned King of Chiang Mai.
But his return to Xieng Dong-Xieng Thong (Luang Phrabang) 13 months later because of the death of his father, King Phothisararat, threw Lan Na in civil war.
This situation lasted until 1558, when Lan Na fell under the Burmese domination for two centuries.
