Wanhua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ximending (Hsimenting), another main attraction of Wanhua, serves as a counter-culture, trendy shopping center and as Taipei's main movie theater district.
Old retired servicemen of various sexual orientations known in Chinese as 怪叔叔 or 怪爺爺 (pinyin: guài shùshu or guài yéyé, literally strange uncle or strange grandfather) are reputed to frequent some of the fast food restaurants and coffee houses in Ximending, trying to solicit sex from people or among themselves.
Their original favorite meeting place was the Ximending McDonalds, but when McDonalds relocated to a nearby location within Ximending, these people scattered to other parts of the area.

The Taipei Times had a piece on Ximending, which sounds like either the kind of place I'd want to live in, or one of those places that 5 years ago was fun and is now full of suburban tourists.
In a small area of Ximending bounded by cinemas, the Danshui River and a strip of karaoke bars and hotels, are lanes and alleys that cater to hip-hop crews and consumers of Asian fashion.
Though papers reported gangland street fights over drugs a few years back, Ximending is now heavily patrolled and has a lot of closed circuit TV cameras mounted on streetlamps.

At a meeting with about 130 members of 44 university and college student clubs from around the country, Chen said he was planning an "ethnic and culture development conference" to work toward a completely equal ethnic environment.
The Presidential Office had arranged a dialogue forum at the Red House Theater in Taipei's Ximending area on Monday in response to a demand by the students who staged a sit-in at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial last week.
Because the student protesters refused to attend the dialogue, claiming that it was just a trick by Chen to win them over, members of college clubs were invited in their place.

The shop was founded by Chen's grandfather in Shanghai in 1936, later relocating along with the Nationalist government when it retreated to Taiwan in 1949.
As the name suggests, the shoes are made entirely out of fabric, soles as well as uppers, stitched together with hemp thread.
