LinuxPlanet - Reviews - Ximian GNOME 1.4: The Monkey Has Landed - The long wait is over.
Ximian's distribution of GNOME is built around the proposition that in addition to the building blocks of the basic desktop environment, some added polish in the form of easier installation and more user-friendly tools are required to truly complete the end-user experience.
To that end, Ximian has to be evaluated not only on the strengths GNOME brings to the table, but how well it succeeds in capitalizing on those strengths and making good on its promise to take them to the next level.
Ximian's former CEO Nat Friedman pointed out several times during the gap between vanilla GNOME 1.4's initial release and Ximian's release of its final product that his company's purpose isn't simply to perform basic quality assurance and binary packages.

Mono had been covered by the General Public License (GPL), the same license that governs Linux, but a newer version of reusable software modules called "classes" stored in "class libraries" will be changed to a license that permits the software to be used in closed-source projects.

Ximian Desktop isn't even a full complete distribution, nor do you get lots of added free software goodies as in a full distro, not to mention the densely packed licensing minefields that this entails for many organisations.
Ximian should be pushing open standards and really communicating those issues with people, not continuing to add to the MS Office format problem.
From a hard-nosed business perspective, Ximian is at a stage where it has to really prove itself to Novell, and the worries of people at KDE being completely replaced in Suse etc. etc.
