Southern platyfish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The southern platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a species of freshwater fish in family Poecilidae of order Cyprinodontiformes.
Wild varieties are drab in coloration, lacking the distinctive dark lateral line common to many Xiphophorus species.
maculatus prefers slow-moving waters of canals, ditches, and warm springs.

 The Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center
The Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center, by providing fish to the international scientific community for study, at the very least reduces collecting pressure on wild populations, and could in the future preserve the only living representatives of some species.
Unlike most mammals, where fertile hybrids between species are difficult or often impossible to produce, Xiphophorus hybrids are almost always fertile and are extremely valuable for their genetic variability and their very specific susceptibilities for many different cancers.

This file contains a systematic overview of Xiphophorus, featuring links to books, other pages on the web about Xiphophorus, pictures etc. Common names in different languages may be also available as well as a short dutch description to the taxon.
This site is made possible through a collaboration between The UT MD Anderson Cancer Center and Southwest Texas State University in conjunction with the Molecular Determinants of Tumorigenesis Program Project.
Xiphophorus fishes are currently utilized in research and are also maintained as pets. Therefore, articles span a diverse range of sub-topics and are published in a wide array of journals, magazines etc. Recent advances in cancer and behavioral research using these fishes has resulted in a drammatic increase of Xiphophorus-related publications.

Similar species: Almost all platies on sale in the shops, with the exception of rare varieties sold from captive breeding programmes, will be commercially produced fish.
Only two species are commonly sold, X. maculatus, and the related Variatus platy, X. variatus.
The latter tends not to come in as many colour varieties and tolerates much lower water temperatures (down to 16°C) due to the climate in which it is found in nature.

platies include those species that used to be in the genus Platypoecilus, but are now included in the genus Xiphophorus (click here for more information about the genus and platies).
Despite the reclassification of platies into Xiphophorus, the abbreviation "platy" stuck as the group's name.
We don't list any scientific names (genus and species) here since we only raise commercial platies which are, for the most part, hybrids between and among three species of Xiphophorus, including X.

 Swordtail - Xiphophorus hellerii
There is much to share about the Xiphophorus hellerii (swordtail).
Also of interest, the swordtail is very closely related to the Xiphophorus maculatus (platy) and cross breeding happens frequently, whether intentionally done for new color variations or whether they simply meet in the same tank for a drink.
Swordtails are not aggressive except during competition for a single female by more than one male and the male platy may have a few playful joists with the male swordtails with the same intentions in mind.
