The Variatus Platy is a different species to the standard Platy, and prefers cooler temperatures.
Variatus Platies are available in quite a large array of tank-bred colours and strains.
Variatus Platies are livebearers, which means that the females give birth to live young.

The variable platyfish (Xiphophorus variatus) is a species of freshwater fish in family Poecilidae of order Cyprinodontiformes.
The species has been introduced and become established in a number of locales, including Colombia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, the latter of which reports a negative impact on native species; the species is considered a potential pest.
variatus is also known by a variety of other common names, including variable platy, variegated platy, Indian platy, parrot platy (Ger.

The size of an adult male, then, is determined by its average growth rate before it reaches maturity and the age at which this happens.

The group includes two species, Xiphophorus maculatus, referred to as common platies, and Xiphophorus variatus, usually referred to as variatus platies.
Variatus platies tend to be somewhat longer in the body with distinctive spotting on the flanks, with a longer and differently shaped dorsal fin.
The most common types of variatus platies which I have seen in pet stores include the sunset variatus (rich gold color in the body with a dull reddish tail) and strawberry variatus (lighter yellow body with a bright red tail).

One of the most popular varieties of Xiphophorus helleri among aguarium hobbyists is the lyretail one, also called the dragon swordtail.

The unknown species has also been compared to three other species of fish, thought to maybe be close relatives: Poecilia sphenops (Ps), Xiphophorus helleri (Xh), and Xiphophorus variatus (Xv).

Based on physical observations, a morphological phylogeny was constructed (Fig 1.) The results showed that Xiphophorus helleri and Xiphophorus variatus were the two most closely related species.

The Corydoras sterbai produce far larger eggs (actually one of their eggs would be the same size as the whole cyst) so we have to forget about them, too.
