The Xiyouji is one of the most popular and well-known novels in the canon of Chinese literature.
The Xiyouji is based on the real life journey of Xuanzang, also known by the Buddhist honorific Tripitaka, to India along the overland route of the Silk Road.
In this epic novel, Tripitaka is accompanied by four disciples: Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Heshang, and the Dragon Prince as the white horse.

Sun Wu Kong is especially good at this, having mastered the way of transforming himself into anything he likes, including a fly, tree, or a beautiful girl.
Xiyouji spans over a huge area, taking readers for a wild ride to the Heavens, volcanoes, seas, wide rivers, mountain peaks, demon-filled caves, right down to the pits of Hell.
The plot is imaginative and full of conflict, either with external enemies or between the pilgrims themselves.

Entitled Xiyouji, it told an exciting journey made by a Buddhist Priest to India in a quest to find some valuable sutras in order to save China.
Along the way, the priest is accompanied by a group of companions - one of which being the Monkey King.
And as long as the people are still enjoying the series Monkey and many anime adaptations are made of this epic tale, it seems unlikely that the legend that is Xiyouji will ever die.

Thus, this is not an individual project by any means and has been growing for some years now.
Herein we shall include the story that began it all, entitled Xiyouji, loosely based on an ancient Chinese legend, as well as any other spinoff or 'flashback' stories thus created.
I guess I should explain a little bit about Xiyouji as it's my brainchild.

Understanding Xuanzang and the Xuanzang spirit - Haraprasad Ray
The erection of Dayan Pagoda (the “Pagoda of the Great Swan”, likening Xuanzang’s return to a migratory bird) at the imperial capital Changan in 652 to commemorate Xuanzang’s historic return by the imperial government was the creation of the monument of Xuanzang and the starting point of the Xuanzang legend.
In subsequent post- Tang dynasties, fantastic Xuanzang stories were told, retold, performed, written, re-written umpteen times till they became Xiyouji- China’s equivalent of Ramayana.
In the novel Xiyouji, Xuanzang acquired two supreme images: (1) being the purest of human beings whose flesh could make demons immortal; (2) entering the Heaven as a new incarnation of the Buddha.

But that's how classic is. Some classical films are no better than an average newly released movie.

Journey To The West/Saijuki aka Xiyouji; Monkey; My Son Goku; Alakazam The Great; Spaceketeers
Possibly inspired by traveler's garbled tales of the Hindu monkey-god Hanuman, Wu Cheng-En's 16th-century novel Xiyouji is the Chinese story most often animated in Japan, perhaps because its trickster hero is more appealing to the children's audience than the dour generals of GREAT CONQUEST or the hotheaded revolutionaries of SUIKODEN.
After magic and science are mixed by parties unknown, Gyumao is brought back, and the monk Genjo Sanzo, accompanied by the usual suspects in updated form, is charged with heading west to determine the cause of the trouble.
