Topic: XMPP

Cover Pages: Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP)
While XMPP provides a generalized, extensible framework for exchanging XML data, it is used mainly for the purpose of building instant messaging and presence applications that meet the requirements of RFC 2779." The XMPP Core specification "includes guidelines to ensure that extensions are possible without conflicts or breaking core interoperability.
This document describes the specific extensions to and applications of XMPP Core that are used to create the basic functionality expected of an instant messaging and presence application as defined in RFC 2779.
XMPP is the core protocol used in the popular Jabber open source and Jabber, Inc. commercial instant messaging systems and is the result of the collaborative efforts of a worldwide group of software architects, developers and companies that comprise the Jabber community.

Short for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, an open, XML-based protocol for server-to-server near-real-time extensible instant messaging and presence.
XMPP also is known as the Jabber protocol because Jabber is based on XMPP.
Jabber is not, however, the only instant messaging application that relies on XMPP.

While XMPP provides a generalized, extensible framework for exchanging XML data, it is used mainly for the purpose of building instant messaging and presence applications that meet the requirements of RFC 2779.
Overview Although XMPP is not wedded to any specific network architecture, to date it usually has been implemented via a client-server architecture wherein a client utilizing XMPP accesses a server over a [TCP] connection, and servers also communicate with each other over TCP connections.
XMPP The rationale for this order is that [TCP] is the base connection layer used by all of the protocols stacked on top of TCP, [TLS] is often provided at the operating system layer, [SASL] is often provided at the application layer, and XMPP is the application itself.

 Jabber Protocols
The base protocols have been approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) under the name Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), and various XMPP extensions continue to be defined in the Jabber Software Foundation's JEP series.
After work by the XMPP WG in the areas of privacy, security, and internationalization, these protocols were approved by the IETF in October 2004 as RFCs 3920 and 3921:
Standards Track JEPs may be considered XMPP extensions (though they are not part of XMPP itself, which is all and only the specifications produced by the IETF's XMPP WG).

Instead we'd have a forest of silos such as the one that still comprises the instant messaging "market", where few of the silos--notably Apple's and AOL's--communicate with one another.
One small encouraging development: Apple's iChat now supports Jabber's IETF-sanctioned XMPP protocol.
So the credit emphasis is a bit off.
