Intuit throat songs have an unusual technique that sounds akin to rhythmic deep raspy hyperventilating or animal sounds.
Indeed, many songs are intended to imitate sounds of nature and daily life (compare with Xoomii).
It's often sung by small groups of women, and it's not unusual for songs to end when one member or the entire ensemble breaks into laughter.

It is pronounced nearly identically in both regions, although Tuva and Mongolia use different languages.
Khoomei will variously be transliterated as Xoomii, Khoomii, Xoomej, etc.
Western terms for Khoomei include Harmonic Singing, Overtone Singing, Diaphonic Singing, Biphonic Singing, etc., and all refer to similar, but not necessarily identical vocal techniques.

The Mongolian folklore has a beautiful story regarding its origins: Rooted in its shamanistic past, the people of the Chandman' sum believe that xoomii originated there and they explain its origin in several ways.
They claim that the unusual features of nature present in their mountains, lakes, rivers and birds together with the intrinsic link to the magical or supernatural gave rise to this style of singing.
