Basically Xorn looks like he'll serve as the kinder, gentler side of the team, and he'll fill the role that Colossus used to serve on the team, and the same role that Nightcrawler is playing over in the Uncanny X-Men.
Xorn acts to balance the team, as he'll likely find him self reigning in the more reactionary members of the team before they can do something they might regret later.
Now the final pages don't really show us why Xorn was unable to repair the damage the police did to the raging mutant, but this is more the fault of the writing than the art, as a single line saying the damage was too great would've made the jarring scene transition less noticeable.

Xorn is an odd concept, and an unusual visual, and John Paul Leon and Bill Sienkiewicz have really captured that moody and creepy look, while still giving his inexpressive mask an air of humanity.
Seeing Xorn, the positive outcome of a harsh situation, contrasted against a tragic outcome for a harsh situation, made for an intriguing story.
Xorn's odd mutation and beautiful worldview and the ruined potential of the mutant in this issue both have elements of tragedy, but they also are quite clear in pointing out how undeniably cool and strange the concept of mutants can be.

If this is the case, and with Magz it is quite possible, he can rip Xorn apart from the macro to the micro to the quantum level.

Assuming the real Xorn has the same backstory, then Xorn was imprisoned in Feng Tu by Chinese generals because of his dangerous mutant powers, and remained there until the events of X-Men 157.
We know the old Xorn was meant to have a star for a head..
The new Xorn, all we know about is that he has a flhole effect with his head.

I hope Morrison decribes how Magneto assumed the role of Xorn when Xorn had been imprisoned since he was a child.
Xorn being magento was a good twist and I expected a quick explanation of all the plotholes.
It's concievable that he used them to block Wolverines olfactory sensors whenever he was around Xorn, and we know that they did affect Wolvy(just not as much)because he was sweating profusely half the time and looked really ugly and disheveled,-though that could just have been Igor Kordeys ugly ass art...
