 AFP548 - Xsan Introduction
Apple has been heavily beta testing Xsan since mid-2004 at a number of different sites tweaking the StoreNext filesystem and the Xsan GUI for OS X. While Apple is very much targeting Xsan towards the video space, the enterprise data center can easily come along for the ride on this one.
At the heart of it, this means that Xsan allows for multiple machines to directly access the same storage without the need for a fileserver in the middle.
Also, Xsan can take advantage of Fibre Channel multipathing to allow for redudandent connections to redundant Fibre Channel switches so the failure of any Fibre Channel cable or switch will not result in an interruption of service as long as you have another FC connection to fall back on.

Apple - Xsan - Video Workflow
Xsan lets you work well within the bandwidth required per video stream for the most common editing formats.
Xsan makes it easy for you to set storage policies and allocate different classes of storage to different purposes without forcing your editors to adhere to onerous rules.
Xsan Admin will notify you via pager or email if a particular user, such as your capture/ingest or finishing station, nears its storage quota.

 AFP548 - Xsan Deployment Advice
Xsan is a cluster file system for OS X. A SAN filesystem allows us to open up all our storage to all our devices.
Xsan will control access to the files to make sure everyone is happy - and it does all this through metadata which is controlled, surprisingly enough, by what is called a metadata controller.
Xsan supports 64 clients on the FC network (an XSR is not a client but a metadata controller is).

 MacDevCenter.com -- Xsan and You
Xsan operates at speeds 20 times faster than typical network storage, since it uses 2 gigabit per second Fibre Channel protocol for its data transfer.
Xsan uses a separate Ethernet network to pass these tokens, so that the Fibre Channel network is free to just pass the file data back and forth.
If you glean one thing from this article, besides how cool Xsan is, it should be that you will need the guidance of someone who is not only an expert in the video realm, but someone who also knows a lot about Ethernet and Fibre Channel networking, OS X Server, and Unix in general.

Xsan lets multiple computers concurrently access terabytes of storage on Xserve RAID over high-speed Fibre Channel.
Xsan storage networking eliminates the bottlenecks of Ethernet-based network file servers, whose performance will only get worse over time as denser formats such as HD become more common.
Using Fibre Channel multipathing, in which two Fibre Channel cables connect a computer to the SAN, an Xsan client can theoretically achieve throughput of up to 400MBps, perfect for multiple editors working on a video project or a compute cluster that needs fast access to data to ensure each node crunches at full capacity.

Apple's Xsan Takes a Bite out of Storage Market
As advertised, Xsan is ''The SAN File System for Mac OS X.'' It is Apple's OEM version of ADIC's StorNext File System, which is designed to be used in a SAN environment.
One thing to note here, Xsan is not a ''SAN in a box'' solution that other vendors, such as HP or EMC, offer.
So while it's not the ''perfect storage solution'', Xsan is, if used correctly, a solid entry into the midrange SAN field, and a compelling product for SMBs, especially those doing multimedia work, or for any company with a multimedia department.
