Xserve RAID - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Xserve RAID's ports are two Fibre Channel ports for regular data transfer, a 10/100 Ethernet port for remote management, and a serial port for UPS communication via the Simple Signaling Protocol.
Apple markets Xserve RAID mainly as a companion to Xserve in file server and high-performance technical computing applications, but the storage array is also useful in some professional environments such as non-linear video editing.
Xserve RAID is available in models costing between $5,999 and $12,999, plus configuration and support options.

Xserve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
How the Xserve line will be affected by Apple's transition to Intel processors, which is planned to be completed by the end of 2006, is unknown as of May 2006.
The Xserve can be used for a variety of applications, including file server, web server or even high performance computing applications using clustering - a dedicated cluster Xserve, the Xserve Cluster Node, without a video card and optical drives is also available.
On April 2, 2003 the Xserve RAID was introduced, providing a much higher capacity and higher throughput disk subsystem for the Xserve.

 Xserve
In addition, Xserve G5 features dual Gigabit Ethernet on the motherboard, which, combined with the point-to-point system controller, means you won’t get contention between your network traffic and other I/O. What you will get is performance rivalling much bigger iron.
For example, the Xserve G5's two double-precision floating-point units let it perform linear equations in LINPACK 8 percent faster than 3.2GHz Xeon-based servers and 50 percent faster than the 2GHz Opteron-based server.
Xserve offers three independent Serial ATA drive channels*, which can be configured with up to 750GB of storage per 1U server with an optional hardware RAID adapter for hardware RAID 0,1,3 and 5.

 Apple - Xserve RAID
Xserve RAID drives feature true hot-swapping capabilities that allow you to remove and replace a failed drive without losing data or interrupting service, thanks to the hardware RAID controller and the Apple-designed drive carrier.
Xserve RAID is an ideal storage solution for file and print, desktop management, web and media streaming services, as well as cluster computing.
Xserve RAID supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5 and 0+1 using the hardware RAID processor, and supports levels 10, 30 and 50 combining hardware RAID capabilities with software RAID in Mac OS X. In addition, Xserve RAID works well paired with Windows, Linux or NetWare servers, making it perfect for mission-critical data storage.

Apple's Xserve RAID offers storage flexibility, speed
While the Xserve and Mac OS X Server are designed to work together as a multifunctional tool -- providing virtually every common network resource and service -- the Xserve RAID is designed to do just one thing: securely store large amounts of data and provide extremely fast access to that data.
Management of an Xserve RAID is accomplished using the device's Ethernet port, which provides an access channel independent of the Fibre Channel network ports used for data storage access.
The Xserve RAID also includes a serial port for connection to a uninterruptible power supply to maintain safe functionality in case of a power failure or power fluctuation.

Xserve offers users power, choice in a 'dream machine'
Like the original Xserve and most rack-mounted servers, the Xserve G5 is designed to run in a server room, allowing average users to take for granted that their network access, server-based applications, e-mail, Web sites and the like will all be there when they need them.
Focusing solely on the hardware, the new Xserve just wows me. It has one or two 2-GHz G5 processors, uses 400-MHz ECC RAM and has a dedicated front-side bus running at 1 GHz (the dual-processor model has two independent front-side buses, one for each processor).
Monitoring an Xserve can be done by using either the status LED on the Xserve itself or by remotely using the Server Monitor application for Mac OS X Server.

Using Xserve for a Small Business LAN
An Xserve running Mac OS X Server is ideal for all the many jobs that hosting a small business network requires.
This is the first in a suite of articles on using Xserve for a small business local area network (LAN); here, we take a high-level look at the capabilities of the Xserve and Mac OS X Server, in the context of a hypothetical LAN.
In order to implement this, the Xserve must have (at least) two network cards: one card that plugs into the switch connecting it to the rest of the LAN, and the other card connected to the external Internet connection.
