  Nissan Xterra Review - Edmunds.com
Built with stout body-on-frame construction and functional four-wheel drive, the Xterra continues to be a steady seller among those who use their SUV for outdoor recreation as well as those who want to give off that impression.
Compared to its car-based SUV competition, the Nissan Xterra's on-pavement performance is not as comfy or refined, but if serious off-roading is part of your routine then we'd recommend it as one of the better new or used sport-utilities on the market.
While it sold well initially, early Nissan Xterras did have a few rough edges: The bare interior was constructed of hard plastic panels, the ride was harsh and the modest four-cylinder and 170-hp V6 engines barely had enough oomph to propel the truck-based SUV around town.

The Xterra utilizes a modified version of the “F-Alpha” platform, developed for the full-size Nissan Armada and full-size Nissan Titan pickup, tailored to suit this application.
For its use in Xterra, the platform utilizes an independent double-wishbone front and rigid leaf spring rear suspension, standard 4.0-liter DOHC V6 rated at 265 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque, and a choice of 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmissions.
Xterra’s exterior styling evokes that of the original, including a highly functional roof rack (now with latchable lid).

 ROCKCRAWLER.com - 2002 Nissan Xterra
Based on the Frontier pickup, the Xterra is a mid-sized SUV aimed specifically at those with an "active" lifestyle.
The power is immediately available, unlike a turbo-charged motor, but in all honesty, after driving the Xterra for a week, we felt the supercharger really brought the power to weight ratio right around where it should be in the first place.
If we were to buy an Xterra, we would certainly want the supercharged model, despite the fact that it requires premium fuel and has the potential for more maintenance down the road.

ROCKCRAWLER.com - Nissan Unveils All New 2005 Xterra in New York
Two of the most significant changes to the new Xterra are the use of a version of the new "F-Alpha" platform, which was created for use on the new Nissan Titan full-size pickup and Nissan Armada full-size SUV, and the utilization of a new 4.0-liter version of Nissan's VQ-series V6 engine.
The 2005 Xterra's wheelbase has been extended two full inches for a smoother ride and greater interior room, yet the overall length is only two-tenths of an inch longer due to a reduced front overhang - which enhances maneuverability in off-road hill climbing and trail situations.
For its use in Xterra, the platform utilizes an independent double-wishbone front and rigid leaf spring rear suspension, standard 4.0-liter DOHC V6 rated at 250-plus horsepower and 270-plus lb-ft of torque, and a choice of 5-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmissions.

The Xterra's occupant volume has grown from 71.3 cubic feet to 99.8 cubic feet — partly from the new platform and partly because the occupants take over a bit more of the cargo space than in the previous generation.

The new Xterra is as spare, simple and rough as buyers want it to be, yet much more modern and refined than it used to be.
