Among artists who studied abroad and returned to China, XU Beihong was exceptionally important in shaping the twentieth century Chinese art practice as well as art education.
Xu Beihong was born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province in 1895 and went to study in France between 1919 and 1927.
After the establishment of the new China, Xu became the director of the Central Institute of Arts, Beijing, where, French academic style training was revered as the scientific way of seeing and positive way of intervening social issues.

Born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China, in 1895, Xu Beihong began drawing at an early age and by 1915 was discovered selling cheap fan paintings in Shanghai and sent by a sponsor to Japan to study art.
Xu himself excelled at figure drawing and painting, and he attempted with mixed results to meld Chinese and Western styles of art.
The Xu Beihong Memorial Museum was established in Beijing in 1954 to house his extensive art collection, which his family donated to the state.

Xu Beihong (Traditional Chinese: 徐悲鴻; Simplified Chinese: 徐悲鸿; pinyin: Xú Bēihóng) (July 19, 1895 - September 26, 1953) (born in Yixing, Jiangsu) was a Chinese painter.
Xu began studying classic Chinese works and calligraphy with his father Xu Dazhang when he was six, and Chinese painting when he was nine.
Xu Beihong was a master of both oils and Chinese ink.

Slave and Lion, a very rare work of Xu Beihong, a Chinese artist famous for his paintings of horse, will be auctioned next month, Christie's Hong Kong said Monday.
According to the auction company, Slave and Lion is one of the very few so far discovered that dated from the artist's early 1920 's, when he stayed in Berlin.
The auction company believed the picture may draw much attention of collectors because of the unique subject and Xu's realistic technique of combining western sense of form and Chinese line of drawing.
