Xu Shu was the pseudonym of Shan Fu, who was Liu Bei's advisor along with Zhuge Liang until the surrender of Jingzhou by Liu Cong.
Xu Shu's mother was captured by Cao Cao, and Xu Shu bade Liu Bei farewell in the crisis in order to "fulfill his filial duty".
However, there was no basis for Xu Shu to fear for his mother's life, as it would be seen as unmanly for Cao Cao to kill an old lady just because her son was serving his rival.
