Fortunately, having played with Xubuntu, I realized that the xscreensavers package also has a slide show module, and so I disabled the KDE Power Option and the KDE screensaver package, and then setup xscreensavers.
Which means I may have to make a choice tonight between being able to use a limited version of VNC and staying with Xubuntu, or getting the VNC working fine and losing the screensaver by switching to Kubuntu.
It fixed a number of Xubuntu problems, and is much snappier even on my machine.

I’ve been using “Xubuntu”, actually an ubuntu server with XFCE installed over since Hoary days, as the only way to have a contemporary OS on an old laptop with somewhat limited resources.
I also love the gnomified look, it was about my only remaining wish which now was there, however, I also noted that you can set the panel to freely movable and it then looks just as it used to do.
