Topic: Xylorimba

In the News (Wed 19 Nov 08)

  Xylorimba Article
The term “xylorimba” clearly refers to some kind of hybrid instrument, but it depends on who is using the term, and when.
I personally have never encountered an instrument having two different overtone tunings on the same keyboard, although Claire Omar Musser is quoted in a 1932 magazine article as claiming that the instrument called a “marimba-xylophone” is tuned with octave overtones in the low range and quint-tuned in the upper range.
By this definition, Messiaen’s version of a xylorimba is really a marimba, because it’s made of wood and sounds as written, but until I run across both a vintage, non-retuned Deagan #730 xylorimba, and a non-retuned Deagan #4132 marimba-xylophone, I can’t completely answer the question.

 Xylorimba
The xylorimba (sometimes known as the xylo-marimba or marimba-xylophone) is a pitched percussion musical instrument which is a sort of combination of the xylophone and the marimba.
Like them, it consists of a series of wooden bars laid out like a piano keyboard, and it combines the range of the two, usually spanning five octaves from the C two octaves below middle C to the C three octaves above middle C. Its music is written in both the treble and bass clefs.
The instrument has been used in a number of 20th century classical works, including Alban Berg's Three Orchestral Pieces (1915, revised 1929), Pierre Boulez' Le marteau sans maître (1955) and works by Olivier Messiaen.

Le Marteau sans maître : Serialism Becomes Respectable
Included are alto voice, alto flute, viola, guitar, vibraphone, xylorimba, and percussion ensemble.
This, coupled with the fact that the instruments have a delicate timbre (with the possible exception of the xylorimba), accounts for the unusual sound of Le Marteau sans maître.
He notes, however, that although the xylorimba relates to the African balaphon, the vibraphone to the Balinese g’ndér, and the guitar to the Japanese koto, no exotic tradition is reflected in the music’s actual composition.

classical music - andante - pierre boulez returns to le marteau sans maître
Those who kept close track of the rapidly-evolving post-World War II music scene already knew Boulez as the very young composer of two astoundingly accomplished piano sonatas, pieces so difficult that only a few pianists could play them.
But it was Le Marteau, with its strikingly contoured solo alto vocal writing and brilliantly-coloured six-person instrumental ensemble of flute, guitar, viola, vibraphone, xylorimba, and percussion that caught the ears of listeners outside the circle of hard-core enthusiasts of the avant-garde.
As Wolfgang Fink points out in his note to this new release, the piece consists of three separate cycles which are interleaved to create a work that has what was then a new kind of stylistic variety.

 TIME.com: Sound of the Future? -- Aug. 25, 1958 -- Page 2
Le Marteau begins with a flurry of seemingly unconnected tones from viola, alto flute and vibraphone, leading into a pointillistic passage that introduces guitar and xylo-rimba in now-and-then sirums and clacks.
In another section, the flute meanders insouciantly over an animated background of xylorimba and bongo drums.
One movement is a lullabylike colloquy between singer and flutter-tongued flute, reminiscent of Schoenberg's 1912 bombshell Pierrot lunaire.

The scoring of the piece also reflects an interest in unusual, almost "exotic" sound qualitites.
See in particular the use of a wide variety of percussion instruments, an invented instrument-the "xylorimba", the "low" scoring for low female voice and alto flute, and the includion of guitar and mandolin.
The rhythm of the work, while often floating and without downbeat articulations, has a "jazzy" quality to it.
