Xylosma is a genus of between 85-100 species of evergreen shrubs and trees in the family Salicaceae.
The main use for the genus is as hedge plants among gardeners in desert and chaparral climates.
Xylosma congestum, the Shiny Xylosma, is the species usually seen in garden hedges and on roadscapes.

Xylosma twigs are brown and also present point lenticels.
By far the most striking and intriguing trunk characteristic is the heavy armor that protects it: large (10 cm), multi-tiered arrays of long, tapering and needle-sharp spines line the lower bole.
Xylosma's unusual spines are probably derived from modified leaves (something that is usually true for flowers as well), thus explaining their leaf-like generation.

Natural History notes: The name Xylosma is from the Greek xylon "wood" and osme "fragrance".
Flowers are yellow-green and inconspicuous, but are very numerous, borne in axillary racemes along the branches.
