Topic: Y (game)

Y - TvWiki, the free encyclopedia
The letter Y was used in Old English, as in Latin, with the value [y]; however, some think that this use was an independent invention in England created by stacking a V and an I, unrelated to the Latin use of the letter.
In biochemistry, Y is the symbol for tyrosine.
In mathematics, y is the usual symbol for the variable represented on the vertical axis (ordinate) in analytic geometry.

Y (game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Y is an abstract strategy game which was first described by Claude Shannon in the early 1950s.
Y was independently reinvented around the same time by Craige Schensted (now Ea Ea) and Charles Titus.
Schensted and Titus' book Mudcrack Y and Poly-Y has a large number of boards for play of Y, all hand-drawn; most of them seem irregular but turn out to be topologically identical to a regular Y board.

 The Game of Y Review
The Game of Y is definitely one of the most fair, balanced strategy games I've played in a long time.
While these other games are merely minor diversions without the depth of Y (like a version of Chinese Checkers), it's nice to know that the makers of the game have sought to further extend the value of your purchase.
The first couple of games I played with my fiancee (before either of us developed a sense for Y strategy) were an absolute riot as we each stumbled toward a win, trying to build blatant, direct lines of stones to connect the edges.

 The Game of Y
In Y, as in Go, Hex, or Star, two players place stones of their designated color (fl or white), one each turn.
Stones are not moved or captured in Y. The object is to form a Y, that is, a chain of stones of your color that connects all three of the board’s sides.
I feel the game has enough merit that it should also be available in a cheap form, so that more people could find out how good it is before investing that kind of money.

Y Can't End in a Draw from Interactive Mathematics Miscellany and Puzzles
The game of Y has been invented by Craige Schensted and Charles Titus after studying Hex in 1953.
In Y, the board is triangular and the sides are not distinguished from each other in any way.
Notably, Hex is a particular case of Y. The former is equivalent to starting Y with two corners of the board filled up with chips of two colors as shown below.

Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.
Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector.

The game of Y is a connection game invented by Craige Schenstead and Charles Titus.
As in Hex, it is impossible for both players to complete a winning connection, and it is also impossible to fill the board without creating a win for one of the players.

It's impossible to put the game in an unwinnable state (a feat which clearly required some extra programming), and there are no sudden deaths.
So, I suspect that this and the fact that the game tries to promote a play that few would have gotten the chance to see, turned a lot of people off and resulted in the relatively low rating.
For example, the main quest in the game is described by your companion as a "gather a bunch of completely unrelated items Fed-X Quest." I suspect that the author had played games like Arthur, where the plot fell into such a quest.
