 The Snowdon Horseshoe
The path continues towards Y Lliwedd until the path splits in two, at this point carry on heading towards Y Lliwedd, ignoring the Watkin Path which heads off right and down towards Cwm Llan.
Once at the foot of the Y Lliwedd climb looking up at this huge spiky monster of rock can be terrifying but in all honesty the scramble to its peak is nothing like as hard as it looks.
Y Lliwedd actually has two summit peaks, the first you will come to is the West Peak at 898M the highest of the two.

The ridge is very exposed, with a huge drop to the north, but the scrambling is reasonably easy, and you can avoid the worst of the exposure by trending to the right of the ridge.
After reaching the rocky west summit of Y Lliwedd, follow the path to the east summit.
Although we found the summit in cloud, and the descent from the summit via the Watkin's Path rather scary in the mist, the cloud cleared and we had glimpes of the summit, and even some weak sunlight as we crested Y Lliwedd.

There are two main routes to the top; the Llanberis Path which follows the Llanberis Mountain Railway, and the Pyg Track.
We set off from the carpark at Pen y Pass and took the Miner's track towards the Causeway and Llyn Llydaw.

 The Snowdon Horseshoe
In the summer months the car park here fills up very early, and you may need to park in Nant Peris and use the park and ride service (this is also cheaper than using the car park at the pass).
It is recommended to go slightly to the right early on, and then as you near the summit make the final ascent on the East ridge.
Care should be taken to stick to the ridge rather than make the mistake of heading down to Clogwyn y Person, especially in the cloud.

Often climbed as part of the Snowdon Horseshoe route but rarely on its own merit, Y Lliwedd is the prominent peak to the left of Snowdon when seen from Capel Curig.
If it stood alone it would be one of the finest mountains in Wales but falling just short of 3000 feet and overshadowed by its loftier neighbour mean that it is ignored by the masses.
Now I followed a steepish path, sometimes on grass and sometimes over boulders and rocky outcrops, up past the prominent peak of Lliwedd Bach, which can be gained in 2 minutes from the path, and presently steeply up to the East Peak of Y Lliwedd.

We got to Pen y Pass car park at 8.45am for an early start and it was already crowded with people.
Most of them were setting off up the Pyg Track or the Miners track for Snowdon but our first goal was Y Lliwedd so we saw only 4 people until we reached the Watkin track.
Fantastic, The last time we were up on Y Lliwedd was 30 years ago.

This route is a classic mountain traverse and one of the finest mountaineering routes in all of Britain, incorporating the almost vertical knife edge of Crib Goch with scrambles on Crib y Ddysgl and Y Lliwedd.
Probably the most common starting point for Snowdon is the Pen y Pass car park (SH 647 555), at the zenith of the Pass of Llanberis, which can be reached easily by road on the A4086 that runs between Llanberis (SH 582 598) and Capel Curig (SH 719 580).
YHA Pen y Pass is the best placed of these and is located right at the start of the PYG Track, Miners Path and Snowdon Horseshoe routes.

Since then I'd progressed: in order the Glyders, Crib Goch, Crib y Ddysgl, Y Lliwedd, Tryfan, Y Garn, Helvellyn, Broad Crag, Scafell Pike, the seven tops of the Carneddau.
Y Garn was a bit of a pull.
I was glad to do the traverse on the way back rather than the various ups and downs but you cannot escape climbing Y Garn again.
