YASNS - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
With a lull following the much-unnoticed creation and disappearance of the original Sixdegrees.com, the world wide web has been hit with a blizzard of social networking web sites, with Friendster rekindling the craze, and sites such as Orkut and Thefacebook following.
The term YASNS, or Yet Another Social Networking Service, has been coined to refer to them collectively, in the long standing tradition of the phrase Yet Another.
You can find it there under the keyword YASNS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YASNS)The list of previous authors is available here: version history (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=YASNSandaction=history).

 N.Q.B. (Not Quite a Blog): 208B: Blog Assignment 7
I don't think that YASNS is useful as a "connections" tool, because none of my "serious" colleagues will stoop to the level of establishing an Orkut profile.
Friendster is friendly enough and Orkut is chic enough to actually attract users in droves (one of my friends remarked that frienster was "like having little trading cards for all of your friends") and I do know some people who have looked for dates on Orkut (although Craigslist probably remains more popular).
I think one of the major failings of YASNS is that they are so insular.

Comment on Micromodels by phil jones
It looked like there was an application : YASNS such as Friendster, Orkut and Tribe were demonstrating it; and that what was needed was a decentralized, supplier-independent version.
But in retrospect, it’s not clear a) what the true application and value of the YASNS is, or b) whether FOAF actually captures it.
My hunch is that the original buzz about YASNS was about “collecting” people and showing them off … to other people.

For the YASNs that provide this feature it's been quite successful but it's quite hard to understand why when the implementations aren't very good compared with the dedicated systems.
My guess is that the current crop of heavily VC supported YASNs will flame out when they burn all their cash and then either disappear or be absorbed.
Someone will work out how to decentralise all the YASN function into a Movable Type style, free, open source project and there'll be a few million YASNs instead of 100.

It seem like all the meta-bloggers have been talking about two things over the last few weeks: YASNS (and their deficiencies) and tagging (as in tags for locating information, attached to the information itself, folksonomy, metadata, etc.).
My experience with YASNS systems has been less than satisfactory; my Orkut and Multiply sites have been abandoned for months because they simply didn’t do anything for me. I wasn’t moved by them, if that makes sense.

YASNS don't allow you to have different articulations of your friends to accomplish what you might have in real life (like, if this person is looking at my profile, show them this).
And Margaret hits home with: I realize that you can never know what another person thinks about you, but I put a lot of weight on the grey area of trust and shared experience.
It would be an interesting experiement to allow users to configure every aspect of their profile to appear differenly to each potential audience, and be configurable not just in terms of degrees of distances (friend vs friend of friend) but also in terms of categories of friends (professional, personal, romantic, platonic, close friend, acquaintance).

Thus, the last year of YASNS gives us a perfect opportunity to understand how design decisions affected user behavior and how user behavior affects any chance of having a business out of social networks.
